ASAP Supplies Hotpot calorifiers can be bought as single or twin coil models. I’ve read the extra coil can be used to heat the water from a secondary heat source.

Can anyone tell me how and why this might be used in a marine application? The only secondary heat source I can think of would be the second engine in a twin installation but I can’t see what the point would be.

Maybe it’s for connecting to a generator if you have one? You could run the generator then to charge your batteries and heat the water? Have I just answered my own question?

Thanks

Yes you could run the generator's cooling system through the other coil, but you can buy diesel boat heaters that not only heat the cabin but also heat water which is piped through the second coil. I know that Whale have been making diesel heaters for the caravan market which heats water instead of air, the water being piped through small radiators. This water can be piped through the calorifier to heat its water.

I have a twin coil tank. One is linked to the engine and one to the webasto heater. But as said you could connect to the generator but I find there is little point as when the generator is on then I can just use the 240v power to energise the heating element.

So basically we can heat the calorifier in three ways on our boat. Very nice in colder latitude.
