Hi all
Had problems with my port engine (AD41) when it refused to go over 2000rpm and chucked out black sooty smoke. Typical symptoms of the turbo not cutting in, am I right?. Changed all the fuel filters before any dismantling took place just for ellimination.
Fitted new turbo today and took her out for a spin, still black sooty smoke and 2000rmp max, any suggestions please.

Cheers

Syd

You do not say whether the 2000rpm max is on or off load. A dud turbo will give lots of black smoke, but the engine will rev normally off load but not produce enough power on load. Black smoke also can be caused by a duff injector passing too much fuel, injector pump problems, air intake leaks, split air hose between the turbo and engine, or an incorrectly set turbo, etc etc. Power loss and smoke if not caused by lack of Turbo boost suggests an injector fault

Black smoke - actually soot - is caused by an incorrect air/fuel mix. The same effect as an over-choked petrol engine, and you need to find out why the engine is either getting too much fuel, or not enough air.

BUT: Are you sure its the engine thats the problem? A rope or polybag on the prop, or some fault in the transmission or prop shaft will cause the same symptoms - overloading the engine so that it cannot develop full speed, and making it smoke.

Thanks Harry.

Your right I forgot to mention that it will rev to its full when not under load but only 2000rpm when under load. Checked the props, which spin freely in nuetral and are clear. Checking for any visible leaks this afternoon

Leaking boost pressure from somewhere, blocked intake filter, knacked prop, blown head gasket?
After that compression check and boost pressure measuring would be the next bits.
It's obviously low on power output althogh you've enough fuel, hence the black smoke.
The above isn't an exhaustive list.
