can anyone recommend a company in the UK who can recondition my volvo/KKK turbos off my 63Ps. I think I have a sticky wastegate but I want to get them stripped, cleaned and rebuilt and tested properly so I know they are both good for next spring. thanks

I certainly can as I have just had mine done, CR turbos in New Milton Hampshire 01425 638426. I dealt with a chap called Craig who was very experienced gave a brilliant service. My 28 year old turbo came back literally like new!. The whole team were totally professional, ignore their website which is aimed at the young boy racers in subarus who I guess account for the majority of their business.

Dont mess around with the wastgate, if a company that does not understand marine turbos they could soon ruin your engine, by all means have the turbo stripped and cleaned but by a new wastgate, 63 and 74/75 engines have many issues that are purely wastegate related.

Hi VP glad you popped in who would you recommend if they were your turbos with wastegates ???

Id buy genuine wastegate as the opening pressure is set by vp as a spare part so it wont be wrong, I use 2 companies to have turbos overhauled local to the midlands, I find the southcoast agents mentioned very expensive compared to what I pay up here.

Would have to agree with VP, do not mess with the wastegates, for what they cost its not worth taking the risks with your engine and its turbo system.

thanks for the advice, I took the turbo off yesterday and finally got the wastegate regulator off in one piece. the poppet valve is undamaged but the valve seat in the turbo body is very pitted. no way it will provide a seal of any kind. there is also a lot of clearance between the exhaust rotor and the rotor housing , about 0.8mm without scrapping off the gunge. so I think overall the turbo is very tired and would benefit from a rebuild and a new regulator just to be sure.

Used this lot for years for turbo both new & rebuilds.

These guys are good but one bit I cannot understand issue of waste gate setting, any approved KKK distributor should not be able to provide reconditioned unit with waste gate boost capsule properly set...however I defer to Volvo guys on this.

KKK turbochargers are a pet hate of mine, general design, materials, in my book, plain poor. Why do OEM's use KKK, certainly not technical merit, just price.

Have never come across turbocharger agent which did no provide decent repair, however prices do vary greatly. For example Turbodynamics are generally expensive for Holset turbo units.

However they can sleeve the useless putty metal turbine housings on KKK marine turbochargers with stainless insert and save the housing. Ever tried sourcing a replacement KKK turbo for a Mercruiser DTronic?

When it comes to Yanmar stuff with Mitsubishi/IHI turbochargers, Turbodynamics provide range of new outright purchase replacement units between £1,2/£1700, which represents far better value than £3,000++++ from Yanmar dealers.
