Tube Nuts

Looking for some ss tube nuts - similar idea to the interscrews used for kitchen cabinets and windows would do, but essentially just female threaded ss tube, pref. M8 and about 1" long.

(To araldite into the cockpit sole and use with M8 machine screws to hold the cockpit sole down).

Anyone got any idea where I might get these?

I ahve the same problem and I intend to weld some M8 nuts onto some stainless plate so that they fit between the cokpit sole parts. I'll let you know how I get on if you want. It has been a problem for a long time with me as well.

My company sell Stainless Steel Rivnuts that you may be able to use for this purpose. These are effectively extra large Pop rivets that have an 8mm thread in the centre. PM me if you want more info.

Hi Nick.
Cant help with the tube nuts, but a Vega near me has fitted a lid into the cockpit sole cover. Its about a foot in diameter. you just lift a ring and twist and your in!
Very handy if its fuel probs ect. I have been thinking of replacing the complete cover with something like this. I was going to go the stainless plates under the sole as Steve suggested, but now not so sure. I like the poprivet idea though of bigmarts, sounds interesting. Dave.

My company are the UK distributors for SWS. Details here ( www.chasmood.com )
VA is german speak for Stainless Steel BTW. A special tool is needed to pull up the Rivnut & stainless Steel ones are very tough to pull. We can hire out the tool. I have known people bodge around the tool & I can explain how this is done but I have never heard of anyone getting away with this on Stainless Steel.

PS Don't worry about the 100 box qty we sell them individually.

Another product, not available from us, that may suit your requirements is a device called a BigHead. Basically a Nut attached to a Stainless Steel Plate approx 1.5 inches in dia. the plate has loads of holes punched in it. It is designed to be bonded into GRP during the moulding process. I don't know where you could get them from but I guess a Google search should come up with something.

I have some inch and a half rubber tubes with a small metric thread inside that may work.
You drill a hole the size of the tube and push it in.
Then you can srew down onto something with the small bolt or panhead screw with a thread.
Because the thread is in the bottom of the tube it pulls up and locks into place.
i have used them to fit dash boards where there is no meat to the surface that you are trying to put it onto.

If any difficulty getting what you want Heli-Coils may be a possibility worth investigating (<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.emhart.com/products/helicoil.html>http://www.emhart.com/products/helicoil.html</A>). They are stainless steel.

I have never seen them used in plastics but they are so used, and they are a bit of a pain if you do the whole thing properly (tapped hole, insert and break tang off) but that may be able to be short circuited with a bit of help from some epoxy perhaps for a few in plastic. They are commonly used for engine mounts onto aluminium engine bearers on big boats so their integrity is fine.

I assume they are available in small quantities as I don't expect boatbuilders buy 100 just to get 8 or 16 to hold an engine or two down in a boat, but I could not comment on UK suppliers.
