Trying to buy a new Jeanneau 64 - nightmare

I got quotes from France and was resigned to buying it in France. I finally phone a Jeanneau dealer in Ireland asking if they were part of the cartel and that I was just about to place the order with a Jeanneau dealer in France but thought I would give them a chance as language between Ireland and me would be less of a problem and accepted that I would still be buying in Euros.

Well that's me booked on an elemecution course before the next Cherbourg rally!

Dom, appreciate your comment - made me smile but seriously communication and clarity can always potentially be a problem - even when working in "English" speaking countries. Its less so in Ireland but noticeable on the continent and USA. eg the word problem to us is something to overcome and relatively minor but in the USA it was considered a showstopper. In Russia I discovered "business English" which was really US english! Did not notice any problems when I built two projects in Cork except got caught out when negotiating with the property developer who at conclusion said I was a fair man. He spotted that I had thought he meant reasonable and he corrected me saying he meant it as a compliment and a "fair" man was a good wheeler dealer of horses etc at a fair! Languages!!

During WWII at important conferences between the allies they had interpreter's to ensure both the English and the US officers clearly understood what the other was saying.

WRT me you just need to understand slurred speech after approx. 15.00hrs on the Saturday - but I love everyone!

Fred Drift - I did suspect that this thread might get pulled after my factual but disparaging comments about my buying experience. Hence my statement that I still retained copies of the correspondence and e mails.

Tranona I sincerely hope you have a better experience than mine and hope your dream does not turn into a nightmare.
So far, so good. My previous experience of buying a new Bavaria influenced my choice this time around. Different dealer and country, but the boat was delivered on time, exactly as ordered and fault free. 15 years later still satisfied with it - but circumstances change and a smaller, more manageable boat is required.

As it happens, there was no pressure to have any dealer fit options unless I took a stock boat that was not quite the spec I wanted. Rather the opposite as I think they have learned that the hassle out weighs any profit they might make. As it happens there was build slot in July so delivery in August so no problem in specifying exactly what I wanted. Not long to wait until I found out whether my confidence is justified!

Oh, I missed that. What happened there then ? What happened about his other boat too, did he ever get his money back ?

Boo2

Others here know more but I believe the case went in his favour. Not sure why he is selling the cnb.

. Mine had the well known/common strum box issue (delamination within the keel) and no-one, even Jeanneau HQ in France , wanted to know/reimburse me for the repairs - within the warranty period. Jeanneau HQ are very good at stonewalling you to the point that all you want to do is get on with your life.

Tried to google strum box but not clear what this is or the problem. Implication from googling is that it's a sump.

Can anyone clarify please?

As I understand it is the filter/pick up for the bilge pump. The one under my desk is by Whale and has holes about 6MM in the screen. Some are quite big to avoid rags etc blocking them.
Dunno about delamination unless it was bonded in.

I tell you what......you buy it and I will crew for you on the 2015 Scuttlebutt Cherbourg trip! :D :D

I have started saving up already. Only €989,999 to go. Thank goodness the Euro is weak at the moment, or there would be no chance I could ever afford it.

The boat is (or was when I last looked) parked up on the hard outside Hamble Yacht Services, so I can keep a close eye on which square inch of antifoul my first €100 has bought...

Without any doubt - try Jamie Tibbet at Network South Wales - info@nybswansea.co.uk

I have bought a couple of Jeanneaus through him in recent years and he has been impeccable to deal with. Young man with a sense of humour and honours his word. Breath of fresh air in the dealer world.

Hm. I bought a new Jeanneau.
I still have it, but I had to fix most of the problems myself, and was tied into their ridiculous transport and boat launching package. But then again, mine is a titchy 35, and they should be sucking up plenty if they are selling one of giant economy sized craft.

I would trust Ian Scott at Clarke and Carter, as he is straight arrows.

Spending that amount and wishing to avoid tax and commision you are missing a trick.

Montenegro currently do not have a sales office for Jeanneau...... ;-)

Good luck!!
