Trouble in the SofF

We have just sold our property in the SoF; the living costs are spiralling out of control, I recon 25-30% more than uk in the supermarkets.

A cheap lunch off 'Le menu' can't be had for less than €20, soon adds up for a family out for the day.

By contrast we're on holiday near Malaga and it's much cheaper than uk even on the full tourist track. Up in the mountains it's comedy cheap (offset by having wounded the hire car twice)

I love the old town of Malaga, spent Christmas there a couple of years ago and totally agree: good quality restaurants at very reasonable prices, courteous staff and generally a very well educated and sophisticated population.

We were planning to move to GiB, until Brexit put a stop to that plan: Spain will exclusively decide what deal GiB gets with the EU..:ambivalence: Expect property crash!

Doesnt surprise me if St Tropez is empty. The booking system is shite. We wanted to visit late last September and tried to book a berth online and by phone and twice were told no the harbour was full. We decided to anchor in the bay next door and went in to St Tropez by dinghy to find the place almost empty which really pissed me off. When I went into the capitannerie to ask why we were refused a berth when the place was empty, they just shrugged. In the end we were told we could berth in the harbour if we wanted and because my guests were keen to be parked in St Tropez we did in the end berth there. But if my experience of St Tropez is typical I'm not surprised boaters are getting fed up with the place

Am I alone in thinking this downturn has only happened since you arrived Mike :).

Thats fine but if the website booking system says the place is full then youre not going to go there to pay the €200

You know what. I've been boating in the Med for 15yrs in places as diverse as SoF, Costa Blanca, Balearics, Costa Brava, Croatia, both sides of Italy and Sardinia and the SoF is the only place I've come across where you have to bribe the harbourmaster to get a berth. I dont have any problem giving a few Euros to a marinero for helping us with our lines but I do bloody object to handing over a fistful of Euros to a greedy harbourmaster for the dubious privilege of parking in his empty marina on top of the already rip off mooring charges

Is this bribe for a berth thing a big boat problem? We have visited S of F many times over the years in 25ft or smaller boats and have never paid more than listed rate for a berth including at St Tropez.

I'm also a bit surprised, wasn't there some mass arrests in St Trop and Toulon not so long ago due to corruption? (Something about boat permis)

The whole coast, including 20 miles inland to Grasse , is under control of ' the boys'. A local restaurant just up the road from us, started by a northern French couple with young children, had to shut up shop when they got a threats and a demand for monthly cash payments.

Hate to think whats its like on the coast.

Yes, and most of the St Tropez staff were sacked and a new "untouchable" manager put in. Dunno if Porto's info is up to date, but anecdotally i've heard there is less corruption there now. Personally I can't stand the place, so i've no first hand info.

Jesus Nick -see my prevoius posts on Antibes ?
Wake up!
In a nut shell you are starring down the barell of of a massive rent hike , end of concession .

--wonder why?

Well as a leaseholder I know that of course, but it's a very long barrel and we can run out our existing leases for the next 5 years without any extra payments, so no reason for a mass exodus now. I'm sure the megayachts have different arrangements though.
