I have been cleaning out all my fuel supply pipes, racor filter housings, basically everything fuel related, except the on engine filter. I always leave that till last as the rest is essentially self bleeding. Not much gunk came out but nice to know it's all clean. Start engines up, no problems instant start, in out of gear, all good. Run both engines at fast idle few a few minutes still all good.

Today decided to change the on engine filter. Closed fuel taps, Popped old filters off new ones on, open fuel valves (yes I checked and triple checked). Open bleed screw on filter housing, start pumping away. Nothing, the odd trace of a bubble but after 15 mins either something is wrong or I am going daft.

I will bleed the other engine, same, the odd trace of a bubble. 15 mins gave up. Cracked open the banjo joint at the lift pump outlet, pumped away still nothing.

Ok must have got a blockage. Took fuel feed hose off starboard engine, rodded it all through, checked racor housing outlet flows when I open fuel tap, all good.

Refit fuel supply hose after checking it's clear again. Try bleeding the engine again with lift pump. Still nothing coming out. I have full travel on the pump lever on both engines.
Gave the engine a quick blip on the starter to move pump cam to different position. Still nothing coming out of bleed screw after copious pumping.

Finally, sod it, bleed the engine using the starter , cough splutters, etc, 2 mins later all running well. Did other engine again cough splutters, away it goes running lovely.

Feeling brave take boat for a trundle around the harbour, all good, take boat for quick blast at sea (beautiful today 20degs and sunny). Engines both good for @3400 rpm bearing in mind I have the hanging gardens of Babylon hanging off the bottom so quite surprised they went that far up the rev range.

Get back in harbour. Try manual bleed again. Sod all still.

Either I am going daft and missing some thing really obvious or both my lift pumps are knackered. What have I done wrong? Thanks

When you open the screw at the top of the filter housing and nothing happens when you pump the lever on the lift pump (?), you need to crank the engine for a split second (or do it manually with a bar). At a certain rotation, the lever won't pump fuel... turn the crank a few degrees and voila! it works!

(This caught me out years ago)

Thanks for the replies- Alt got it right. Turned engines over by hand @ 120 degrees manual lift pump working again. I was confused by both engines showing the same problem. Lesson learned
