Trisail .. to boom or not?

Hi Jimi

I don't understand the reason behind wanting to be able to easily disconnect your vang (am assuming that is the gas strut you refer to)?

When I set the trysail for 3 days heading north from St Maarten, with a wretched solid vang, I strappped the boom down as hard as I could to the toerail, the boom ended up just above the guardrails, braced with the mainsheet. Made getting in and out of the companionway a bit awkward.

Decent topping lift a good idea, especially with a fractionally rigged boat!

OK, the end of our boom won't reach the toerail due to the pilothouse type thingy (don't know what you call them there but lowish like the HR screens with a bit of a roof on it). And we don't have a topping lift.

We centre the mainsheet traveller and then sheet boom down hard against the vang which locks it against vertical motion. On the pilothouse thingy each side there are hand rails and we lash hard out to one of those which locks the boom solid horizontally so's it doesn't lash around (useful when in a rolly anchorage at night too - no clack, clack, clack,...). Boom ends up close to centre line of the boat and at normal height.

I know others lash to the toerail tho' but not sure that I would want to get into getting the vang off in rough seas.
