I am taking delivery of a new Jeanneau Prestige 36 in about a month, I have already ordered lots of goodies from the manufacturer but i am having difficulty determining if i need to fit trim tabs. The dealer is adament that they are not required, however when i look at specs of boats for sale, most 36 footers and above seem to have them fitted. What would be the advice of all you experienced sea dogs? The engines are Volvo's new D6's rated at 310 HP each. Thanks in anticipation.

Strange. It said that no one had answered you. So felt sorry for you!! I've never heard of a modern boat with no trim tabs. Maybe it dont need them. But they are usefull for getting a better ride in differing conditions. Why not see how it is without them then fit next year. Suppose it depends on what you want to spend.

Assuming that you have outdrives, it's possible to trim the boat using them, so I guess that's why your dealer is saying no need. Can't say I've heard of many modern 36 ft mobos without tabs, however.

I think I'd go for them, unless the dealer has some unthought of - and irresistible - reason why you can do without.

I would definately say "get them fitted". Mate of mine has a Beneteau 10.80 and was told that he would not need them by the selling agent. Regrets every word. Now spends most of his cruising with a "list" to port or stbd.......depending on course and wind strength/direction.

BTW where are you based?

Hows about filling in your profile you get many more replies that way and people can help you as they can understand where you are and what cruising you are doing.

your boat will certainly get up on the plain ok without tabs and your bow up/down attitude can be adjusted perfectly ok with your outdrives. But you will have limited or no lateral control - and unless your crew and cargo stay perfectly balanced, this is something you are going to want to adjust.

Best thing is to ask for a sea trial before you take delivery and take some extra bodies with you for some experiments - you'll be surprised!

yep, i think you needem. shaftdrive definitely, sterndrive nice to have for er trimming the boat to sit straight up in a beam sea. I esp use ours in mist, to set the radar to be able to "see" further foward.

He may be sayiomng you don't neededm cos it is a beautifully balanced boat, which is good to know. But the beam sea thing still applies - when the sea or wind comes from one side and you are then at an angle all the time. So, gettem.

Incidemntally, the ways to bustem are
a) never usem so they seize up - give them a brief up and down each trip/
b) usem at massive speed - they often can't take it for long if at all above 20 knots
c) leave them extended (ie fully down) and then reverse hard against them.
d) leave them extended whilst you ar away from the boat, then barnacles etc turn up on the shiny bits of piston, then they bust the seals when you operate them the next time.

Thanks to all of you for your help. I have filled in some of the details on the personal bit, but being a luddite i will have to ask my teenage son to help with the rest. We are based in Plymouth at Yacht Haven, there are 4 Prestige 36s' in Plymouth and to my knowledge none of them have tabs fitted.

I recommend the Eltrim trim tabs, all electrical so no oil resevoirs to top up and very easy installation. They cover 12v and 24v systems

Also they have nice controls....

Not sure about the autotrim idea though.
