Hi Everyone,

As per my previous post, i am looking for your thoughts and advice on a Trident Warrior 40 that i am in the process of purchasing, the owner was asking, $69000, i put forward an offer for $57,000 that was accepted pending a Survey and Sea trial, this is the listing, 1997 Trident WARRIOR 40 For Sale - Clarke & Carter having spoken to the broker, the current owner bought the boat and has thrown money at the boat, but his circumstances have changed and he needs to sell, also his time visiting the boat has been very limited due to his location and circumstances.

Now my concerns are, the water ingress as mentioned in a previous post, trying to source new windows and Hatches and replace these were needed , the boat is currently in Granada and i am in the UK, my DIY skills are pretty none existent, my current boat a westerly 33, the work carried out on her was completed in a boatyard, so the Warrior 40, i would have to get the work carried out in Granada, and also pay for Hard-standing while in the process, so these costs will mount up, of which i am aware, and have no issues with, so the advice i am seeking help with, is, do you think its practicable to go ahead with the Survey and Sea-trial,

My current situation is, i live in the UK and work in Africa, my current work rotation isn't the best, so until the project i am on finishes, my time with the boat would be very limited, and the fact id like to eventually get the boat back to the UK in the future, i set a budget of £55000 for a Bluewater boat, wasn't really looking for a project, just a turnkey and off i go, so my question is, am i being realistic? would the boat end up being a good buy, if nothing major was found on the survey,

Any help/advice would be welcome, feel free to slate me, especially if you think i am about to do something outrages, as i can take it on the chin, i am just looking for your thoughts and advice, before i jump with both feet :)

You won't be able to bring the boat back to the UK without at least paying VAT and possibly complying with the latest standards.

I would suggest that is not the boat for you. It is "cheap" because it is somebody'd abandoned dream in a location which means the market is very limited - a footloose keen DIY person who is happy to buy a boat that needs work and can only be used/sold outside of the EU or UK.

If you want a near turnkey boat in that size/price range have a look at this portsmouth.boatshed.com/westerly_conway-boat-344464.html BTW £55k is not a big budget for that size and quality of boat ready to go ocean cruising starting from the UK

I'm with Tranona.

If you live in the UK and work in Africa, where do you plan to keep the boat?

Things inevitably break/need replacing, given your situation, you will have to pay a professional for any planned and unplanned maintenance. I get the feeling you were drawn to the price and thought about practicalities after.

You don't say what your plans are ie try to sail when not working or give up work and sail off into the sunset. Either way, I'd walk away from it and buy a UK boat.

Hi Tranona

Many thanks for your reply and opinion, i was also thinking along the same lines, i do have leeway on my budget, and to be honest, i have a westerly 33 ketch, had the headlining replaced, engine overhaul etc. the Conway is a nice boat, but to be honest, i dont want another ketch, i guess i will continue my search

Back in 2005 when I was looking for a boat, I was tempted by a Warrior 40 but ended up buying a Jeanneau 45.2. I found out quite a bit about the Warrior which was about the same age as the one advertised. The owner of that boat had seen the hull moulded and ballasted. The ballast in that boat was not lead, but steel punchings set in resin. I later heard from the man who bought it, and he had spent a lot of money on osmosis treatment. Where do you plan to sail? The boat is in Grenada, and if you have to bring it back to the UK to sail you will have issues with VAT and possibly compliance. Does the boat have an EU rating plate? For use in EU waters (which included UK waters at that time) it needs one, and as far as I know the UK still accepts EU rating plates as confirming compliance with standards.

Hi Norman

Thank you for your reply, no it doesn't have an EU rating plate, it hasn't been mentioned by the broker. so my plan was to sail around the Med and UK once i got the boat across the Atlantic, i have emailed the broker, being realistic, with my work etc. the boat wouldn't get my full attention also,

The deal breaker is having to use a boatyard to do any work.
Sourcing windows, hatches etc is not a problem. Boats of this era generally fitted off the shelf parts. Nothing too much in the way of custom parts.
As you can't do the work yourself either through access or lack of skills you're going to spend a fortune on labour.
