As anyone used treadmaster on a steel deck ? my old steel deck is looking quite tatty and although i contemplated textured masonary paint as suggested on this site, the slight unevenness of the deck and old paint would not fully hide this..

Hi Alan
Last Friday I covered my deck with Treadmaster, it was very tricky , but looks good, my deck is fibreglass so no problems.
However to fit on steel if its very uneven it will show. what about using paint with rubber particles in it? its sort of resin based and goes off after 30 mins, it would be great to cover uneven surface and its antislip. cant remeber the name, but I will try and find invoice.
hope it some help

Hi Alan
The Treadmaster on our steel deck was deteriorating with rust in places under the treadmaster, so I removed it, using a plastering tool and much elbow grease!, and then belt sanded the back of the Treadmaster before replacement. The steel deck was sandblasted and spraypainted with a zinc paint prior to re-sticking the treadmaster. This was done using a two pot contact adhesive (just in case I ever wanted to remove it again – and epoxy seemed too permanent!). It has now been down for quite a few years and totally satisfactory. I have recently sealed the edges with a non setting sealant as it will be the edges which are likely to lift first. All in all, I am very pleased how it has performed and certainly a great non–slip surface. Hope that helps.

I haven't done it and I don't have a steel boat. Before putting Treadmaster down I would make sure the steel and anticorrosive scheme is in good condition.
If you have any corrosion in your steel it will be very obvious with paint on the top so you can repair it before the problem grows. Treadmaster will hide a problem until it is quite big and you have a major repair job to do.
There are plenty of good high build non slip coatings on the market but mainly from suppliers to commercial shipping rather than yacht paints. They can be self levelling to even out your deck and some even look OK too!

Hi

I put treadmaster on my steely, you just have to watch what you stick it down with, and this is dependent upon the deck coating system. I had PU paint, and therefore was wary about using an epoxy based glue (PU on epoxy = good, epoxy on PU=bad. If only becaus ethe eposy can go brittle, then crack and let in water) I therefore used sikaflex to stick it down. I thinned the sika with PU thinners to avoid any lumpiness, and applied with a spreader to the underside of the TM. I then used a hard roller to ensure there were no bumps. Cleaning up the squidged out sika from around the edges as I went. Four years and two atlantic crossings later it looked exactly the same as when I put it down.
