I have been looking at travel insurance for our trip to Greece from Portsmouth this year.

Is there any insurance that is more appropriate to the longer term sailor. We are not livaboards but will be away for 4 to 5 months this year.

All policies that I have seen are designed for the package tour type thingy, and have covers which I am not worried about.

All I would like to have is cover on health, and flights, once booked normally at short notice. I note all the exclusions which sight strikes etc - which might distroy cover to Greece (notice of unrest) and flying by BA - strike pending....

Perhaps I will go with just my EU health card and be damned.....

We have travel insurance with Pantaenius. Annual cover worldwide with max individual sailing trips of 90 days and max individual non-sailing trips of 30 days cost £210 for wife and I (age 57 and 60). More expensive if >65 and I believe not available if >70.
We always return to UK during July/Aug so have no problem meeting the 90 day limit per individual trip.

You could try Insure & Go, I had a 12 month policy with them, one of the very few I could find that offered a full 12 months trip cover, you'd have to check the smallprint to see if they cover sailing...

We use Jade Stanley multi-trip - an AXA policy underwritten by AUL. Limited to 12miles offshore, but does cover "sailing". We extend it to cover 90 days. It costs about £160 for two people aged about 58. We concluded that it was the best we could do and that we would just have to risk those few passages which we did beyond the 12 mile limit. We use http://healthcareinternational.com £1100 pa for 4 of us world wide (including up to 60 days in the USA) unlimited travel.
No complaints so far after 4 years, loads of different policies to choose from. Designed for mainly for ex pats, but they where more than happy to cater for us long term live-aboards.

Thanks for that - will start phoning around and working out the most suitable cover.

Hi

Try world nomads, they will cover offshore sailing, look in the Adventurous section. You can arrange a policy to suit how many days you need. Targeted at backpacker but the cover suits long term cruisers. Give them a call and explain your plans. We have cover with them, 7 years on and off. One claim for dental work which was paid promptly.

Do not be put off by the backer packer tag, its basic insurance. Add the bits you need and you will turn in into flash packer. There was some time ago a post on here about Nomads and how good they responded to child going into hospital from a cruising boat.

Hi - I have now had quotes from the sublime to the ridiculous!

Best price was Insure and Go, this does a max of 95 days at any one trip, but that should not be a problem as I will start my trip from the South of France and not Portsmouth. They will also cover offshore too, at an extra cost of £6 per day. So with three major passages - Marseilles to Corsica. Sardinia to Sicily and Sicily to Corfu we will only be more than 12 miles out for 6 days or so. Price for 2 £85 annual insurance plus £24 extreme sport cover for the offshore bits. Medical expenses £5M etc.

At the other end of the scale we have the specialist yacht policies, Topsail etc, which come out at £365. This includes search and rescue etc.... and medical at £10M, which for the EU is a little high.

I think I will therefore go the Insure and Go job - but I will also look at World Nomads before I do.

Be careful. When I looked at this a few years ago the cheaper policies tended to exclude personal accident and personal liability.......but you had to look at the small print to discover this. Might be worth double checking this with Insure and Go.

EU health cards for us - figure out that if we get injured/need of health care back to the UK and the NHS is not for us - prefer a French/Italian/Greek/Turkish etc. hospital. (and Lyn does work for the NHS so speaks from a position of some knowledge).

Just the boat insured as per usual with cruising limits extended as required. All offshore stuff covered on that.
