question. does the transduser need to be fitted verticaly?
the sounder is a dated NASA unit more than that i dont know

The depth transducer should be fitted substantially vertical. The NASA transducer has a 40 (inclusive) degree beam angle so if you are 20 degrees off vertical you will be right on the edge of the beam. The best way to mount ,in a grp hull, is with an in hull mounting kit. This allows you to fit the transducer vertical on a sloping part of the hull.
