I have a Nasa Clipper depth transducer and need to top up the oil in the hull mounting. does this need to be special il or can anything do?

any liquid will do as long as it does not evaporate or freeze or attack the plastic. Caster oil is good.

Depth transducers need an oil top up?
My Raymarine setup either doesn’t need it or I’ve neglected it for the last 20 years

I installed my NASA Clipper echo sounder transducer in 1998, filled its mounting tube with the oil supplied, and have never disturbed it since. No oil has leaked out and the instrument works perfectly, so I can't see any point in meddling with it.

When fitted inside the hull there must be no air between the transducer and the hull. Hence fill the kit with something harmless that will not freeze - aka coolant.

I’ve used various liquids, neat anti freeze, olive oil etc but I’ve found fairy liquid ( other brands are available) works best and there’s no worries about spilling it. This is in my airmar 72? In hull transducer.

How is Fairy kept from freezing, storage is recommended to be in the 0 to 35 C range, so no apparent anti-freeze properties?

Only if they leak which sometimes they do at the seal. I have one in my willaims rib that has leaked from nee. I have now disconnected it

Mine leaks a few millilitres per year and has to be topped up. I even have a syringe on board to measure out the required 72ml.
