Hi,

we’ve just bought our first boat, a Regal Commodore 2665. At 7.75m, what size of trailer would we need to get should we decide to go down that route, and any recommendations for a source of used trailers, or a good supplier of new ones?

TIA!

With a quoted dry weight of over 3100kg you are not going to be able to put together a rig that will be legal on our roads unless you are looking at towing with some kind of commercial vehicle rig.
So assuming you are after a yard trailer, then local boatyards or ebay probably your best bet.

Trailer sizes are usually determined by measuring from the bow eye (where you winch onto the trailer) to the transom. Take this measurement and then speak with trailer manufacturers.

Thank you everyone for all the information. I had considered the weight, but clearly not properly, I hadn’t even thought of the width…!

Just going through these discussions with the rear admiral, trying to educate her in what is possible and what is not.

Was going to plumb for a SiB for this coming season just to get herself used to a boat a bit more, but... directions from the Rear has made it clear that is not an option.
She wants a cabin, she wants to be able to sleep for a long weekend on board and it has to be able to be trailable.

At least the purse strings got loosened a bit for those requirements, so, I'm looking at a Hardy Family Pilot 20 or maybe a Hardy 25 if one at the right price/condition pops up. Both of those are able to be put on a trailer and towed. We are going to look at two Pilot 20s when we come over in a couple of weeks.

Wife wants to at first boat on Loch Lomond and then venture out to the west with us eventually going up to the Caley canal at Ft William and heading to Inverness.

Now a legal nicety, if I buy a boat on a trailer in the UK, as it would be over 500kg, to be towed behind my car it would have to have it's own registration as the car is now registered in Belgium, I will have to speak with my insurance agent about it. Maybe I can tow up to the Dutch/Belgian border and then stick the boat/trailer on a low loader trailer registered in Belgium and tow it the remaining 15km from the border to the house. The boat + trailer and other trailer would still be under the 3.5tonne limit for me to take it behind my car and then take it to the test station to get it registered.

Google says the beam of the regal is 2.59m... its only the trailer width that is limited to 2.55m. As madaboutheboat says, the boat itself can be wider than the trailer. So you should be fine for width.

Re Belgium. Surely a trailer towed by a Belgian reg vehicle must comply to Belgian rules? We in UK don’t test or register trailers, so can you put car reg on trailer? Why no take the trailer to Belgium and have it tested and registered?. Will have to have EU conformity.

Trailers here are quite expensive comparatively, and being a Scot with short arms that can't reach the bottom of my pockets... trailers are for sale in the UK at between 1/3 and 1/2 the price here in Belgium... 500kg gross and under just used the car reg and is covered by my car insurance, above 500kg it needs it's own registration, insurance and testing. I work with trailers that can take up to 3.5tonnes quite regularly.
As per this:

One of the boats comes with a trailer the other does not, so at the moment making a list of snags that may trip us up so we can avoid or deal with them later.
