Can anyone give me some advice as to a decent trailer sailor as a first boat. I'm looking for something in the 20ft range, around £5000. I bought PBO this week and there was a review of several boats but it also mentioned reviews in previous issues - does anyone know which issues?

Thanks,
Jeremy

I know 2 people with Prelude 19 trailor sailers. One has a drop keel and the other twin keels.

Both have proved to be fast and seaworthy with one venturing from South Wales to Ireland last year.

My own boat is an Anderson 22 drop keel trailor sailer. But I dont trail it often .Up to about 20 foot you can use a car but any bigger you will really need a 4x4.

The Prelude comes up second hand for between 2000 and 4000 pounds.

There are lots of similar designs on the market which would fit the bill.

One point to watch out for is have a good look at the trailer as well as the boat. Very often the brakes will be seized up with rust and bearings waiting to fall apart .If the previous owner will deliver the boat for you its an indication that he has faith in the trailer.

Check out the PBO back issues. They've just finished a series on trailer sailers
from 16 foot to 25 foot over the last year. I found them a very usefull starting point
when I started looking.
Happy hunting !

Swift 18 is a good boat to start on, easy to tow behind a med size car, good to sail and with practice can be launched & recovered with out getting your feet wet, it is also unsinkable although in my six years of sailing a Swift i did not try that part of its assets! but it does give you confidence when the weather turns rough.
