I accept jockey wheel will not be 100% accurate. The hook is further out so extra leverage means there will be more KG's on the hook than on the jockey wheel, but I think in most cases it is accurate enough.

Next time I measure one, I will try both and report back. The result is probably worth knowing.

The hitch is further out than the jockey wheel, so it will have less weight on it, not more.

Yes of course, silly mistake, but the point still stands, unless the jockey wheel is miles away from the hitch it will be accurate enough.

Easy enough to work out the correcting factor (apply the ratio of the distance between the tow ball and the centre of the axle or axles and the distance of the jockey between same), make sure you apply the correction the right way around and you can then safely use the jockey wheel to measure from. Make about 8% difference on mine, with as someone has stated the jockey figure MUST be higher....

Well, thanks peeps, took the plunge and bunged the boat on the SBS 2500. Went to the weigh bridge...anyone want a guess as to what the trailer and boat came in at? A pint in the lulworth for whoever get's it right!

Thanks to Spottydog for a tremendous amount of help today, very nice of him to stop me driving off without straps and a bunch of other very important safety issues, thank goodness he was there!

So, weights for the trailer and boat, or if you prefer just the boat. The trailer is 550 Kilos...

So, in summary Boat and trailer are 2800 Kilos which is the limit I've seen for the car. The IVA regulations state (that a nice chap on the Pajero forums found for me):

10. A vehicle which is capable of towing must have a technically permissible towing mass which conforms with the information below

Where a vehicle is capable of towing a trailer fitted with a service braking system, the technically permissible maximum towable mass of the vehicle must not exceed either of:
• the technically permissible mass of the towing vehicle, (OR, for off- road vehicles 1.5 times that mass (See note 3)
• 3500Kg

Note 3: Definition of an “Off-Road Vehicle” as applied to an M1: (in 70/156EEC) A vehicle of category M1 would be considered to be an Off-Road vehicle if they have: - at least one front axle and at least one rear axle designed to be driven simultaneously including vehicles where the drive to one axle can be disengaged,

or

- at least one differential locking mechanism or at least one mechanism having a similar effect and if they can climb a 30 % gradient calculated for a solo vehicle.

In addition, they must satisfy at least five (5) of the following six (6) requirements:
• the approach angle must be at least 25°
• the departure angle must be at least 20°
• the ramp angle must be at least 20°
• the ground clearance under the front axle must be at least 180mm,
• the ground clearance under the rear axle must be at least 180mm
• the ground clearance between the axles must be at least 200mm

Evidence either from a manufacturer or a test lab would need to be supplied to substantiate this.

I'm going to try and get the weight down to 2500-2600 kilos by;-

- Doing the journey with less fuel, I reckon 150k-200k can be saved here
- Remove the crap from the boat including 4hp two stroke outboard (gotta be 40kilos?), tender bedding etc.
- Drive no more than 50 mph

Lastly, stabilisers, can anyone recommend something for this setup?

..little hiccup...anyone help? Want to get the wheels off and put new pads on and going to replace wheel barings....the wheels have one locking nut that has a funny shaped 6 pronged star. Called SBS, it's not theres...gah..anyone have any ideas short of drilling the bloody things out?
