Trailer Boating? Fun or folly?

28 feet,
"Towing weight is 2 tonnes plus engine and personal effects"
and that doesn't mention if the trailer is included. You're going to be approaching 3 tons, so the tow vehicle is going to be a small commercial or a large 4x4.

Used to tow a lot, last towed boat was a Norman 20 with 100hp Ford petrol coupled to Enfield drive (back in the 70's) Tow car was a Landrover SWB, later on a LWB. In both cases a ball hitch on the front made manouvering a dream. With the LWB we got an old Artillery recovery winch fitted under the back with a PTO (these days a 12v electric does the job) and this made recovery a dream. Waders were all we ever needed.

The problem with a Shogun 2.8tdi which is a great towcar and very comfortable on long runs (we've got a Pajero Fieldmaster now, had an Exceed before that) is fitting a front hitch, but power wise it's a dream and they're not too expensive these days now that the market is flooded with them. Gives 25mpg pushed so not too expensive on the road and loads of places for s/h bits if you need them. Joy of the Norman 20 was enough space for 2 plus 2 in the cockpit, we even had davits and a small inflatable on it! Used it regularly from Langstone across to Bembridge where parents lived, travelling regardless of weather although not always comfortably in a blow!

Also cruised the Broads, Thames, canals (boating about in muck!) Arun, Blackwater etc. Was good to be able to (a)use the loo, (b) cook and (c) sleep aboard. Longest cruise with both cat and dog aboard 10 days.

Reccomend a 2-wheel trailer with car tyres and not the usual trailer sort which are'nt much good. 4 wheel is ok if you get a flat, you can keep going carefully usually, downside is cost and trying to manhandle it - Sampson might do it, I could'nt.

Simple set of issues:-
- Great if you live inland and want to use on multiple of rivers
- Then ocasionally at sea.
- Can work on boat at home
- Needs planning
- Get a big 4x4 - wet slipways and tides going out need a beast.
- Be careful on Slips - you need someone to help - not a single handed recovery IMHO. One person on the boat - t'other on the Car / Trailer

p.s. before anyone gets picky - we were only towing a few miles with the hood up !!
