Trailer advice, 2 or 4 wheels

Plenty of caravans around this weight on two wheels - though personally we were very glad to have fitted Tyron tyre bands when we had a tyre blowout on a 1,300kg caravan offside on the M6 when towing at 60 mph. With these Tyron bands was just a slight wobble and tryre stayed on the rim

However, cant think of many 23 ft boats at this weight all up

When we bought our Jeanneau Tonic the plated max of the trailer was 2000kgs and its empty weight plated was 275 kGS giving a boat weight of 1725Kgs. The plate lied. Boat weight not too far out but trailer weight, the bit the manufacturer should have had an idea about or been able to weigh was I think 450kgs.

I would always have a twin wheel trailer, at least if something goes wrong with 1 wheel you should still have 3 working to come to a stop.

Check your insurance first

Check your car insurance!

After years of towing a twin axle I found out recently, to my amazement, that my insurance only covered a single axle trailer (I happened to be bored and was reading the small print of my renewal notice). When I phoned to query this for a normal 8'x4' Indespension trailer they were quite clear "we do not cover twin axle trailers of any description, large or small, under your standard car insurance. You can get a separate policy to cover a twin axle if you wish".

I understand that this is now fairly standard and that many have been caught out. Best to check first.

This one does not have cradle, and I didnt remember seeing it perched on oil drums etc

However I found out today (170 mile round trip plus a 1 hour hold up on the M25 specially to get the answers for you :D ) That it is a lifting keel. I'd forgotten that it swings up under the boat rather than lifting straight up into a CB case

And the trailer is a 4 wheeler.

You da man.

I have towed with both and much preferred the feel of the 4 wheel trailer.

A 4 wheel trailer also has another advantage - as I discovered when I lost a wheel off my 2 wheeler towing the boat along the motorway...
