Tradewind 35

I read these threads with interest as future plans include buying a 35ish foot cruising boat.

However many of the posts knocking the old style boats don't suggest what to get instead! What are the modern alternatives? I am not talking ben, jen etc as my reading is that they are not equivalent sea boats. I assume people mean hallberg rassy, malo etc? Which cost a fortune!

So anyone care to list more modern, sea kindly, affordable at say 10 years old??!! I suspect there aren't any??!!

I sailed for 20 years a Saga 40. It never did let me down. Sold it only because we wanted more room with the kids. Two years later the boy is not joining us anymore on the Weekends. But that is another story. We bought a North Wind 47. Did and does need some TLC but it is a delight to sail. Very well built, beside the teakdeck.
Actually there is a Northwind 44 on the market. Preowned yachts of that yard may be an option for you.

My brother was looking for something along this line and ended up buying a Contest 35 that was about 20 years old. It is certainly a heavier displacement with a quality build and he says is very sea kindly, but certainkly not as fast as my Westerly Fulmar. What he saved by buying an older yacht, he spent on major renovations. Might be one for you to consider.

Biscay 36 Ketch - the forgotten long-keeler?

Just been browsing this thread and the mention of the Biscay 36 caught my eye.
The Biscay 36 is an excellent long-keeler and has a very similar layout to the Tradewind 35. Alan Hill was her designer and from recollection, the first ketch was launched in 1975. 40 Biscay's were built in total - sloop and ketch versions. The Biscay's dry weight is just over 7 tons. The Biscay 36 ketch mentioned in the previous note is "Ayesha" (launched 1982)which was owned by Paul Heiney who sailed her single-handed across the north Atlantic several years ago.
I have owned "Mary Luck" (Launched 1981) for 11 years now and enjoy her very much. A no-nonsense blue water cruiser which inspires confidence.
