Further to this thread form 2019 where I asked for advice on towing to Largs.

This year we went by car at the end of May as we were sailing with someone else and came back Via Kilmarnock , A76 and A75 to Gretna then M6 South

We took the boat up and back via that route this year. On the way up we stopped for dinner bed and breackfast at the Trigonny Hotel Closeburn which was a great place to break the journey. We had recced it on the way back previously and asked about stopping with the boat and dog. They remebered us and were very accommodating , we were able to reverse the boat into a space off the main car park,

I think that is now our preferred route. The road surface is good, above Closeburn traffic was not heavy, there were plenty of laybys, we were able to maintain a good speed (45MPH + most of the time) There is one section of probably about 7 or 8 miles where you are climibing with a lot of bends that took care. Not much came up behind us and there were plenty of places to aid those who did to overtake or to pull over. Scenery was great not that I could look but some very depressed looking ex coal mining villages.

why not just take the m74 up to glasgow / greenock then on down to largs , easy stress free motoring .

Have you tried towing on that route yourself?

I have and won't be doing it again. Poor road surface amongst other things, lots of roundabouts involvement with Glasgow traffic and further to travel.

Our other route is M74, M8. M77 to Kilmarnock, across to Irvine and up to Largs.

I also recommend M74, A75 to Castle Douglas, A713 to Ayr and then A77 north. It's 15 - 30 minutes longer than taking the A76 but the roads are quiet, the scenery is lovely and there some nice places to break the journey ... including my house.
