OK, the recommendations re linked smoke and fire detectors may be useful. Can we have product names or links please ?

These are the ones I bought for throughout the boat , Fire angel WST 630Q, but with a 5 second look they have been replaced by a new model I just haven't had a chance to look through the range and see what is now suitable equivalent, or better.
FireAngel WST-630Q Radio-Interlink Smoke Alarm with 10 Year Lithium Battery, Multi : Amazon.co.uk: DIY & Tools

Easy to set up and link .

I use the 10 year Lithium battery FireAngel detectors in the house, got them in B&Q, all linked and sitting on the house network/internet and report to my iPhone at home and abroad.
They are easy to set up and with the internet gateway installed they have the remote alarm function to let me know of any problems when I'm away from home.

Switches are hardly likely to be in the forecabin. More likely to be in the cockpit.
Correct Sherlock .:)

This is getting painful .
HELM ! Where the rest of the switches are .
See BBC vid .

Oh and another snippet Pete .Fibreglass burns rapidly and boat fires soon spread .

It ain’t the engine room with the machinery ( chargers ) or batteries going boom .

That looks forward of the helm to me.

However well I understand the principles involved, I still find it amazing that a boat can burn that far down without sinking (yet) - a bit like I fully understand how huge airplanes can fly but still find it an mind-boggling sight.
Several years ago with a friend on his Targa52 a shore visitor boarded in Cowes and placed his cigar by the stern cleat. The wind blow it on to the fibre glass and bingo huge flame I put it out with a damp towel quite quickly but the smoke and flame was immediate and a fair bit of damage was done with 30 sec

Moral of this is not to invite cigar smokers on board, or go even further, my boat has a ‘No Smoking’ sign visible to all who come aboard.
