When putting away the main You are suppose to have the ties between the foot of the sail and boom and over the top of the gaff boom. Why? Why not have the tires going under the boom and over the gaff?

So is mine. You could still feed the ties between the foot of the sail and the boom - that's how I tie the reefs, not round the boom.

Since the foot of the sail is laced to the boom it's surely ok to tie the reefs around the boom. It won't rip the sail. It has been ok for me, not tied tightly just to tidy the sail.
