It is easy to overlook the quality of the operation at Port Chantereyne. With it being such a familiar stopover; a daysail from the South Coast ports, on the milk-run up/down Channel for we East Coast boats. But the past week has reminded me what a class operation they are. In terms of both welcome and service:
I arrived at 23.00 last Tuesday. On passage from St Malo, riding the front of Erin's remnants. A most enjoyable sail, reaching in 16kts. Until, at dusk, the lights (plus nav and pilot) went out, as we exited the Alderney Race. Stargazer's domestic bank dropping from 70% / 12.6v to 45% /10.1v (flat as a pancake) within half an hour. The engine battery was OK. So we came in propelled by wind and tide, with the systems powered straight off the alternator.
My first pleasant surprise was: Chantereyne did not charge me for my overnight arrival (where most would) and counted my free Passport Escales nights, as if they were paid, in awarding a free 7th night in port. As well as extending a 10% discount for being an MDL berth holder. All at their suggestion.
It was however the support, which I received with the battery change, which really impressed. All offered, rather than asked for. In the past I have found that marinas tend to be grudging about being used as parcel depots. Not so Chantereyne. When I checked the delivery address, with the Capitainerie (incidentally it is not the one on Google) they immediately reconfirmed my phone number record, so that I could be alerted the momement that the batteries arrived. And they were true to their word. They had also reserved one of the 'chariots' for my use, in transporting the batteries the length of the marina. Parking it behind the desk, for ease of loading. Later despatching a chap in a golf cart to collect the redundant batteries. Thoughtfully saving me a walk, in the rain, to the disposal point out on the sea wall.
Top marks, for friendly efficiency to Port Chantereyne!
