Anyone got any opinions (stupid question on this forum) of the Tohatsu 2.5? Deal this week is excellent (£299) and I need to get something better than the Seagull for the tender... I'm technically competent so no problem with maintenance etc... In comparison with others htey are very cheap (Mariner £340, Honda £400, Yamaha £430) and I realise you do tend to get what you pay for. There was a thread here a while ago about the cooling system requiring special care, is there anything else?

TIA

Have got one and have had no issues with it, but havent got any experience of the Honda, mariner or Yam so can't say how they compare!

I have been told that Tohatsu measure their HP at the Prop, as opposed to the engine output, so it might be closer to a 3 Hp from the others?

Otherwise, a good littel engine, trouble free, starts first time, works as it should and as it is cheaper than the others... why the hell not!

Tohatsu

Are the oldest outboard manufacturer in the world still trading.

They make, for re-badging, the lower HP outboards for all except Suzuki, Honda and, possibly, Mariner.

They rate their HP at shaft so their 2.5hp becomes, in it's Mercury version, 2.2hp.

Far better, if you can get it, is their 3.5. It's exactly the same power head with larger inlet & higher CR but fitted with a dog clutch.

Only disadvantage Tohatsu use a bronze shearpin which shears sometimes when you put it into gear (fit a Mercury ss one) and the gearchange sometimes seizes (lubricate x3 season).

The motor planes a 3.16 inflatable-keel dinghy with 1 up and, in the 6 years I've had it, not failed to start or given any trouble despite 2 duckings.

It's quite well-used doing about 15-18 hours/season and gives about 50 mins on 1 tankful.

apart from lower revs and therefore power, and no clutch the 2.5 is the same motor.

Re: Tohatsu

the tohatsu is the original and mercury/mariner the same lump with more expensive badges so you've got a good deal. i agree with charles that the 3.3 or 3.5 version is a better bet as it's no heavier and gives a lot more push. the only time i'd opt for the low power version is with a soft transom dinghy. my mariner 3.3 is way too powerful for the 10ft avon.

The 3.5 is pretty much the same motor and is only £339 on the tohatsu stand - worth the extra money I reckon.
