My two survived sailing holidays with us from birth. So did we. Fundamental rules: 1. One Adult's, (preferably Mum) ONLY role on the boat is 100% supervision of toddler(s) 2. (Ties with 1 as is just as important!) Toddler wears safety flotation at ALL times outside the cabin, AND a safety line. Surprising how long it takes an overboard child to surface again even wearing proper LJ. (Dont ask - the worse few seconds of my life when 4 yo old went backwards out of the dinghy and disappeared while I turned to help Mum down: hence rule 1 above!)
Edit: why Mum? Not being sexist or anything. Simply that maternal instinct will override any other interest in what is going on around. That makes her the most attentive watcher. Dads, Uncles etc are more likely to be distracted by the boat/scenery/ ship on collision course etc....
