Tobermory Harbour closed

Funny how all the rural places which want you to visit in normal times are now saying dont use your cottage/mobile home/caravan/boat to socially distance - keep off - this is a local area/shop/hospital for local people only and we dont want you using up our facilities

Mull is used to getting a lot of paying visitors from cruise ships. I expect CV19 will shut down the cruise ship industry for a few years so you would have thought that Tobermoray harbour would be one of the last to close to visitors rather than one of the first.

Probably very sensible. Most ferries, commercial and fishing boats will be crewed by locals. Visiting yachts could have crew from anywhere. World evidence demonstrates that this virus spreads by people transmission. Cases on remote Mull would be catastrophic; requiring serious cases to be helicoptered off to Inverness. I was contemplating going to my boat ( a long way from where I live) but realise my obligation is to stay local.

Are you serious? Do you know how many icu facilities there are on mull?
Or even Oban & Fort William for that matter.

Of course you are not wanted there, why on earth would they want tourists arriving and potentially spreading covid 19. Or do you think it's just like flu too?

Why on earth are tourists arriving anyway? Which part of "essential travel" does a sailing trip come under? Or a wee holiday?

If you want to sail your boat, sail it somewhere with no people and anchor off, don't go ashore. Then you can't infect anyone if you happen to have it. Even better for you, you can't catch it from anyone if your free of it.

It really is like watching the Darwin awards live and in slow motion in the uk right now.

You'd be surprised how little you are wanted even at the best of times, especially if you are a second home owner. In some areas it is getting very close to "come home to a REAL fire" time again.

They are not alone.
I used to know Tobermory quite well, it’s very close to where I choose to socially isolate myself when I am in the Uk.

This current situation is unprecedented for anyone under 100 years old. Uncertainty causes the greatest fears. I am no knowing current situation in the UK, Scotland, The Highlands and Islands.
A few cases 7 reported deaths in Scotland. Might not sound like much today.
800 deaths a day in Italy may be the predicted future for parts of the Uk.
or hopefully the situation will be contained and in a couple of months we will all complain about this as an over reaction.

We have a few cases here where I live, ( South coast BC), I live on an Island, some of my neighbours wish to raise the draw bridge. Hoping it will protect them.
Some First Nation communities are being very insistent on this.
The history of first contact and the impacts of disease, only just beyond living memory’s. It’s a hot topic
At this time, this is beyond any of our governments recommendation.
I personally am away from home my role in life deemed essential .
I have observed small communities here demanding no visitors come, demanding those present leave, demanding residents returning home be quarantined.
So I am Concerned, When I return home, I will be quarantined until they require my services.
which they will,

I also have to calm people who provide those services, point out, there demand to stop people using our service is still beyond any government or health authorities requirements. Rumers persist, uncertainty abundant, fear is increasing.

it’s unfortunately the way the people of Tobermory feel. Is it justified? Probably not at this time, Will it be justified? Possibly sooner than we imagine or fear.

We should respectfully comply with thier wishes.
Tobermory is almost certainly not the only small isolated community feeling this way.

Many people in my community do. Even if I disagree.

One positive note, My local harbour authority is considering extending my winter moorage. I might take up the offer. It’s looking very likely my boat and I won’t be welcomed with open arms on quite a few of my favourite islands.

In my opinion. The reality is, I the virus spreads to any of these small communities, they will need our outside help. they are better off to reamain connected.

Mebbe they just realise that money isn't the be all and end all of everything?

The problem that rural areas like Mull and Galloway (where I live) can certainly cope with tourists but are not really equipped for a significant increase in the number of people needing major medical treatment. By and large hospitals are distributed where people live and not where they go on holiday.
