To Survey or Not to Survey?

Hi all,

if you were buying an older cheaper (less than £3k) sailing boat would you carry out a survey pre purchase or just take the risk given the price and the age? Looking at a1969 snapdragon.

Any advice appreciated.

Tell the forum where this boat is located, and you might find an experienced forum sailor who could cast an eye and a gentle hammer over the boat.

The cost of a survey is not worth paying as you could better use the money on upgrades and repairs and toys. If you have no idea about boats, as Sarabande says there are plenty of people who will have an opinion

Assume at that price you'll only be insuring third party but, if planning on fully comp then insurers will most likely require a survey so, a pre-purchase one would be dual purpose and spot any problems before buying.

I'm with the others. At £3k I wouldn't bother. Perhaps insist that put her alongside to dry out so that you have a good crawl around underneath.

Do you have any practical skills etc.Just because it cheap May lumber you with a beep of unwanted problems and you are responsible for it being in the public domain so to speak

A mate is buying his first yacht and I am guiding him through the process.
He knows nothing about yachts or sailing, and has just done a Comp Crew course. He is skint and looking at boats under £3000.
We have found a MacWester 26 for £1500, I advised him to get a pre-purchase survey, after checking everything as thoroughly as possible myself.
If his offer is accepted, he will know if the boat is worth new standing rigging and a roller furling system.
It is different for everyone, but sometimes a survey is a great idea.
