To Origo or not that is the question!

heating pies

buy those in foil containers if possible

place pliers from outboard tool kit in bottom of frying pan to use as trivet and to allow hot air to circulate

put pie on top of pliers

out lid on frying pan - you did buy a pan with a lid didn't you?

heat pie

it works

The plastic on the pliers handles melts terribly...........

At 10.5" dia it might be a little on the large side, especially if you've got fiddles

I have found that a few of these

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Strider-W...t=LH_DefaultDomain_3&var=&hash=item3aa8aecb63

in combination with a lidded pan such as this

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Red-B...t=LH_DefaultDomain_3&var=&hash=item5b106aefa3

allows you to create all round heat which is ideal for heating pies and several vegetables

it allows you to be creative with one ring jenga

It strikes me that there is a potentially massive market (boat/caravan/camping, even home) for a cross between the boaties frying pan and the double skillet. I'd certainly buy one at the right price. Any entrepreneurs out there?

I have just ripped out my old gas cooker and an unsafe gas installation. Replaced it with an Origo 3000. Dead simple, no gas inspection hassle no insurance concerns, no gas worries, decent gimbles, secure pan holders and less weight overall. Let's see how I get on with it. I have only used it once so far and it boiled the kettle quicker than the old gas set up!

How do the emissions from an Origo compare with a gas cooker?
I need to get a cooker for my new boat and it is a choice between an Origo single burner or one of the Camping Gaz things where the burner screws directly onto the gas canister. Ventilation is relatively poor - no forehatch - so am looking for the safest out of those two.

When you burn hydrocarbons you always get the same products so no real difference between gas and alcohol.

We had a single Origo on Aquaplane and it was ok, the First 18 couldn't have the door in from inside so we were always open/draughty so no fume problem, but we did have a forehatch.

Do you have a safe way to store gas? Aquaplane just had the lazarette which was sealed from the cabin but it wasn't drained overboard.

Had an origo on the previous boat and would happily go for another. I used French "alcohol a Bruler " which at the time (10 yrs ago) was €3.50 for 5 litres. Only down side is pans get sooty, but I would go for one again rather than gas.

10 quid fast camping gas stove or £130 slow meths? No comparison.

Well I've seen two nasty accidents with camping gas stoves, none with Origos. Anything under pressure has to have an additional risk attaching to it. I take the gas stove camping alright, but not on the boat as I don't like gas in an enclosed space where you cant put much distance between you and it in the event of an unplanned gas escape. You only need a mix of 5% gas 95% air for an explosive mix. Thats not a lot of gas to blow your boat and you to kingdom come, and we have seen examples of that from time to time.

If you find the risk an acceptable one then fair enough. I feel a lot safer with an Origo.

Love my origo. Quick to boil, no likely explosions. Must try to source this bio ethanol, as meths is getting harder to find locally. ...........

I have an origo on my little boat (see my blog if you're interested) and am very pleased with it. It is a little slower than gas, but much safer IMO. I use bio ethanol (bought 12x1 litre bottles off amazon), which has far less smell than meths, but does still have more smell than gas. Would do the same again if I was starting from scratch.

Another thing, those cheap camping gas stoves eat the gas, I used one camping once and to boil a kettle took half a canister.....

Bah humbug !

Maybe I had duff canisters then. Only lasted a couple of boils and frying a bit of pig.

Has anyone sourced cheap bio ethanol, and I assume it will work in my origo?

My last bottle of meths cost me 3 quid for 250ml in dartmouth. I make that 60 quid for a 5 litre red can ! Daylight robbery......

It seems to e turning into a gas vs meths, my choice is best debate.

On my Centaur I have an Origo but there is no place to store gas safely.

On my Trail Sailer I have gas, 2 burners and a grill but I can store gas safely. The toaster does it for me.

Boiling a kettle is probably a bit slower on the meths but who cares if you don't blow up?

I have has trouble sourcing Bio ethanol from B&Q recently. Go-Outdoors are supposed to do 5l for ~£15 but they didn't have it when I went for it.

I got 12 x 1l bottles off fleabay for £30 which works for me.

Bio ethanol is best bought off Amazon. I buy the 1l squeezy bottles intended for filling up spirit fires cos of the ease and simplicity of simply squeezing the entire bottle into a nearly empty burner (they hold 1.2l so there's thus no danger of overfilling)

You can save a bit by buying in larger containers but not enough to make the extra hassle of storage and decanting worthwhile imo
