To launch or not to launch?

Green oldgit

Of course, i think he should go out on it immediately.

But nonetheless, it seems dealers will dekliver a boat asap unless instructed otherwise and for a boat that is so close to New Year, i'd make the call to ensure the build cert is dated january.

It is not peculiar nor abnormal to wonder how others will view the boat when the time comes round for resale. It's not for no reason that items are priced just below "barrier" prices, so they are £9.95 and so on. Will it make a difference if the boat/car or whatever is dated 1979 instead of 1980? Will it make a difference that young children now will have been born in the PREVIOUS CENTURY sixty years hence. Yes, of course.

Your post seems to display not a little envy, oldgit. Has it not occurred to you that you are not the focus, the reason for the actions of other people. They don't buy a new car to piss you off, oldgit. They buy a new car or boat cos they want one. They want a new car, for example, and want it so much that they rush out and take delivery at the earliest possible moment- midnight! There's nobody to see it at midnight...except the curtina-flicking oldgit? "He's gone and got a new car, mother! Just to piss me off I'll bet!..."

Suspect that boatowners divide between those who simply enjoy boating and the fleeting joy of a new toy....and the miserable and not-much-fun types who've never had a new car or new boat and never will cos neither their boss nor others can stand them but they're quite determined that they are not missing out on anything at all, when they are, and their unpleasant envy bars them from celebrating the jumping excitement of somebody else's good fortune.

Re:Now or later.

Having just bought a 1989 boat I was not fussed wether she was 1987/8/9 or 90 etc. I was concened soley about spec, condition and price with year of manufacture being way way down the list. Perhaps it may be more important for buyers of much newer boats but not for me.

But then what do I know about buying boats .......................?

My boat is here in time for winter....

Re: Green oldgit

B**locks. With oldgit here. Either want to go boating, or worried about depreciation. If it's that much of a financial hurdle, you buy something you can afford to take the loss on.

New toy, take it out immediately, and just enjoy having it.

If it hasn't already got one, stick a heater on it and get launched asap and enjoy some of the great winter days we get down here. What's the point of having a toy and not using it?

Re: Green oldgit

Once I started to financially rationalise my purchase it got too scary so I gave up and bought boat anyway! Boats are not usually a rational purchase so should be enjoyed and not spend time fretting about possible depreciation. I use my boat to try to escape any business and financial worries - not to create more.

Perhaps should compile a What Car? style depreciation index to put us all off ....

My boat is here in time for winter....

Re: Green oldgit

Seriously peed off with where this thread is going. Boating is for fun. Little or no financial profit in it unless you are mechanically minded and do as some of the forum members do, and buy old boats and refurbish. Full of admiration for them. Less admiring of rich gits who want to admonish those who don't see things the way they do

oops!! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Sorry, forgot where I was, delete "spanking" - musn't over excite our large elderly readership.

Re:Now or later.

Not at all...how could anyone think that someone buying a 3-engined Sunsqueaker was acting logically with his head!!! howver the fact that I'm not buying a £2m gin palce and sold my wife into white slavery might suggest that I haven't totally lost my marbles..

However the fact of the matter is that those R vs P cars and jan 2001 vs Dec 2001 do sell for more. It IS also true of boats , if you don't believe me go and do your own spreadshets and research...........subjectivity exists in all our decisions.

We just have different values...yours are quality and condition. Not Right .... Not Wrong..... just Different.

The Acid Test

Not a question of Enjoyment vs Depreciation. or

Fun vs Finance.

If that were true , you'd give me your boat for nothing , remortgage your house and replace it.

Same thing. So will you?

Do not accept that depreciation levels of any purchase do NOT form part of anyone's decisions here, nor that they have even considered it

If you can honestly answer No I haven't to above you are either bankrupt or 'Would you like to buy a new boat/car/house/sand dune... sir as I have just what you need1'

Re: Green oldgit

Congratulations. Your last sentence is the longest I've ever seen in print.
Calm down before you have a turn....... please.
The boat was actually built about 7 months ago so identity plate etc already in place.
Thanks for your advice anyway. If we had ordered a new-build we would certainly not have taken delivery at the end of a year, for the valid reasons you mention.

Re: Green oldgit

So, does this mean the end of the prevarication or what. Are you just going to geddit in the oggin & have some fun or are you gonna stick it on stilts and look at it for the winter?

Re: Green oldgit

I've just postponed 2 important appointments for the week after "arrival day". Tut Tut. Enough said. BUT on all your heads be it if the boat is worth over 10s 6d less than it otherwise would have been when we come to sell it. We will demand total compensation from all those that voted for instant commissioning.
OUT !

Hey...Now\'s your chance Learner

Well Learner me old mate (I feel I can call you that now that we've engaged in the old telephonic verbals and I ve helped you sort the piccy of tcm sitting by the pan)
I have to say this post of yours is the most flagrant example yet of teaching granny to suck eggs. (not that I think whisper's a grannie you understand, but then he couldnt be ,could he, cos he says he's a layabout and everyone knows you couldnt possibly describe a grannie like that.)
No, wot I mean is here you are presuming to give the guy experienced advice on how you would do this or do that ...............
C'mon man, wise up....whisper's actually BOUGHT A BOAT and is merely indulging in a little prevarication as to whether he should now get it wet or not......do you understand????.....he's actually bought a boat!!!!!
so's why dont you send hima a PM (cos we're all a bit bored with it) and ask him how he made his mind up and wot sort of problems he had placing the order and was it difficult reading the numbers off his visa card etc etc............

I'd rather be me than him.......

launch it . commisison it use it for a few weeks then take it out and do all those other little bits on it that you haven't predicted over January - February without rushing. Fit those boat shows must haves etc then enjoy 2003......and I will be down to see her as well!

best of luck

ps if you don't launch Christmas in your household will be a serious disaster

I\'m glad Learner hasn\'t got a boat.Learner

Sorry B1 but I can’t agree. I for one am quite at ease with the fact that Learner hasn’t bought a boat yet, at least this way there is only the question of which boat and so only one spreadsheet. Can you imagine what it is going to be like if/when he buys something…. There will be which plotter, fish finder, radar, autopilot, windlass, bowthruster, anchor, dingy/rib/etc. etc. spreadsheets and endless postings on the board to question/support various decisions to be made. Then by the time he has made his mind up on any of the above his boat will be 2 years old and need replacing and around we go again.

No, I think one purchase is all I can cope with.

Learner mustn\'t buy a boat......

Oh b*gg*r .....I hadnt thought of it that way.......
you're absolutely right of course, it will be a total nightmare and Ive a feeling spreadsheets wont be the end of it....he'll be wanting mySQL databases and dynamic server interpolation of results with ........oh no.....you're right
Learner mustn't buy a boat....
I will now have to rethink my whole campaign tactics but I'm grateful to you for pointing out the obvious..........
