Next weekend I am planning to sail from Burnham on Crouch to Holland, The plan was to make for Roompot but with easterlies likely I may need to reconsider our destination. IJmuiden is too far for us in one passage and I don't fancy the delay of going South first say to Oostende and than creep up the coast. Has anybody crossed with easterlies before and if so what is the best tack to take.

Which easterlies?

With such a light wind predicted, chances are that the sea-breeze will be dominant, just like this weekend: in the morning the predicted easterly, and as the temperature difference between land and sea starts to mount: NW-erly. Then, and quite sudden, at around 1830-1900, the temperature difference will be to little, and the regular easterly will reappear.

SO: reach to Oostende/Blankenberge en coasthop to Holland.Tides are good for it: NE current kicks in around 0900 that weekend, untill 1500. Enough to reach
a) Westerschelde, and take the inland route from there (Flushing-Veerse Meer-Oosterschelde)
b) With enough boat speed, you might just manage to reach the Roompot

Wind strength predictions seem to be for Easterly 3 so you are likely to be doing quite a bit of motoring anyway if you want to get across in a day. Don't forget how much the TSS influences your decisions on routeing. I would head on port tack until the tide turns, probably just about coinciding with TSS crossing. Then tack onto starboard as the ebb starts and go as far as you can, to Vlissingen, Roompot or Stellendam. It's usually about 18 hours for us Stellendam to Ramsgate or Dover and Scheveningen to Lowestoft.
