Thinking of a change of scenery.

Would welcome forum views on Titchmarsh, good or bad, that may not be obvious to the visitor.

Much of one's choice of marina depends on access by road and sea and the kind of sailing you want to do. Having originally lived in Herts I would always go for any option that was nearer home.

We've been in Titchmarsh for about 12 years now and have been very content. It is friendly both in the office and on the water and prices are as fair as one could reasonably hope. Access by sea for our 1.5m draft is around HW +/- 4 hours but this is mainly dictated by the depth at Stone Point and Pye End. We can creep in and out at LW neaps. For us, one consideration is that the approach roads are usually free of traffic, though we use back roads when Clacton traffic is going to be a problem.

The pontoons, if you don't know them, are perforated metal, which is good in snow and ice but not so good with bare feet. Electricity is by a card system, which can be a bit of a pain at times but works well enough. Manoeuvring space is not bad, better than some but not over-generous, and the fingers are a decent length and secure to walk on. The main grouse visitors have is that there are only rings to tie to, though most residents instal fixed lines of their own. There is usually plenty of parking space, and also hard standing for the winter. We find the chandlers useful for many things if they are small or Fox's aren't cheaper.

The elderly of Walton lunch daily at the Harbour Lights. The food is OK there without being special, but the carvery is good value in the week.

It is a decent, but not posh, marina, but one of its main selling points is that the area around is outstanding (but not Walton town in the summer!)

We've always found it friendly when we visit, a few places to go to overnight if you don't fancy a big trip and the Suffolk rivers are within easy reach. The silting at Stone Point is a bigger issue now than in previous years. The area around the marina is very nice as has been said. But personally I like Walton in the summer, but I'm a sucker for chav seaside and like a trip into Felixstowe to gamble on the 2p slide machines

Thanks, that is really informative.

The access, Stone Point and Pye End, were one of my concerns, however I only have a draft of a meter so shouldn't be too much of a problem. Perhaps a bit more planning may be needed.

The journey to Titchmarsh is the other consideration. At the moment we are only fifteen minutes from Essex Marina but an hour and fifteen to Titchmarsh.

We have spent some time at Titchmarsh during the past few summers and can concur with a lot of what you have mentioned, the friendliness is one of the things that attracts us.

We can concur with the above points.There for 18 months but now in the Med, but that has nothing to do with Titchmarsh. I would however like to add that the engineers and
service we have had from French Marine, based there and at Briightlingsea are second to none, and are highly recommended.

+1 for Titchmarsh. Very friendly marina & staff. Our only (small) gripe is the mooring rings on the pontoon fingers IMHO they can be dangerous if trying to take a turn on them as most people push their fingers through.........
We draw 1.75 and still cope OK makes you very tidal aware. The electric card system works well and the marina is not open to any swell etc you could do alot worse than Titchmarsh.

Thanks for the informative comments, they help us make our decision a little easier. Deposit paid yesterday and a move to Titchmarsh on the cards late March early April.

I don't know your boat but we'll be back on H24 when they finish the dredging.

See navigating Stone Point is a separate Thread but how is the mud in & on the approaches to Titchmarsh Marine?

Generally, if you can get up to the entrance, you can get in. There is no sill; it is just mud. There can be shallows within the harbour but this changes as they dredge bits.

Any further channelling of the entrance channel by visiting yachts will be welcome.
