Tired, Old Boats

A few months ago there was a thread, which I cannot now locate.

The gist was that when looking for cheap boats, there is this place (East Midlands from memory) full of neglected stinky old boats whose only virtue is low cost.

Can someone please remind me where it is?

Thanks.

It is
http://www.nationwideboatsales.co.uk

However you will find old boats waiting for a new owner at any harbour/marina especially at this time of the year.
Edited by paulrossall on 15/11/2003 22:40 (server time).

Have bought boat from this site. Most boats are in fairly good order, but as with all yards it has its share of fixer uppers.Always worth a good low bid on any boat as miles from any water(canals do not count)paid 9000 on the asking of 12750 for Princess 25 in excellent condition..

Thers also a good place in Woodbridge adjacent to the railway line near the basin. Can't remember the name, (begins with S.....?)but lots of DIY boats there, I'm sure someone will come up with the name from the forum.

Ah, you must mean Andy Seedhouse. Let me choose my words carefully; a range of well-used craft are always on display, ideal for the keen DIYer who is not necessarily looking to get afloat immediately.

This probably refers to Nationwide Boat Sales at Chesterfield, Derbyshire. While there are some boats in the tired, old category, there are also some rather nice newer ones, though usually in the sub-30ft range. It's not the place you'd think of to find saltwater cruising boats, but they have some good boats in from time to time. I bought my 27ft Sabre (old but not tired) from there and found them very helpful, friendly and straight. And although the long-way-from-the-sea location keeps sale prices reasonable, I found road haulage on a three and a half ton boat surprisingly cheap at £300 plus VAT to the Orwell. Not so much tired boats as boats that have spent too long in the yard, the result I think of free yard storage until sale, which allows owners who are not in a hurry to sell to put unrealistic prices on. My boat had been there for two years and yet was a good buy at £10,000. Original asking price was I think £14,000. And they are very happy for you to stroll round and go on any number of boats if you ask 'em first. Recommended!

As I see you're in Somerset, you might also consider a look at Boating World in Landrake, near Plymouth (Google for Boating World Landrake will find it). Sounds similar, with a collection of sometimes somewhat neglected looking boats for often quite cheap prices - again encouraged by free storage for a year.

They also have some very nice boats for sale - recently sold my corribee through them!

Cheers
Patrick
