I need to do some (re)wiring - light load 12v. I might need to replaced some mast head wiring (10m) for a 200ma LED nav light as well as running some (new) power for a tactick transducer box.

Stupid question but what size of tinned twin-core cable do I need and where do I get it?

I did at one point find a online calculator for the cable size but cannot find it ....

Thanks

Has tinned wire gone out of fashion? Its what i use on my boat, but seems quite difficult to get hold of in chandleries and electricians. I suppose with copper prices and adhesive heat shrink, it isn't worth the extra expense for some people.

The above calculator gives 0.5mm² for a 3% volts drop.

The LED light is probably not as sensitive to volts drop as an incandescent filament bulb will be so from that point of view it may not even have to be that heavy but from a physical robustness point of view 0.5mm is a bit on the light side.
I'd not therefore us less than 1.0mm² and even that is a bit light.

It's a niche product and more expensive than ordinary wire; once upon a time the only place you would see tinned cable was in aircraft, navy ships and military equipment. If anything it's easier to buy now than it has ever been; if it wasn't for the silly copper price it would be reasonable on the pocket. Chandleries are a terrible place to buy wire and electrical stuff, unless you live in a major city you need to go online; even if the chandler has a reasonable range of stuff it's often cheap **** that will turn green at the first sight of salt water.

As has been said, the mm2 needed to supply the load is a bit academic in this instance as you need the robustness too as it is in a mast, so, probably get some twin to get a bit extra support and abrasion resistance from the sheath. It’s not that expensive Fernaux Ridall are far from the cheapest unless you have a trade account when they are quite good if you need something quick, these people are about 30% cheaper and will do you a 30m reel of 1.5mm2 decent quality twin at just over £20, Cobra it ain’t, but decent stuff.

Thanks all.

So far I've found;

Any advice - seems to be lots of cheap ones, and then the UL one.

Ta.

They're all the same apart from the ASAP one which looks like Cobra to me, the best you can get, ultra flexible and incredible bend radius, I use it in tight areas, hot areas etc but for your use the others are more than adequate.
