It's that weekend coming up again; the first weekend in October which, for Poole power boaters, marks the annual harbour dash as everyone coming though the bridge at 1230h gets to the main channel and opens up! What a sight.
Thewarning is twofold -
(1) don't bother trying to find somewhere flat in a small boat anywhere near the main channel and
(2) the area between Buoys 20 and 10 remains subject to the 10 knot limit (that's from the Main channel/North channel split out through the harbour entrance).

It will only last a month (the madness) - then most lay up their boats and we can all enjoy the calm again..../forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Being in a small boat when theres loads of boats carving the water up is heaven! my little 15 footer with a 115hp loves to leap from wave to wave, thats what being on the water is about! being able to feel your on the water :) Bigger the boat less the involvement, less the fun! and yes I realise im in the minority - most want to be cocooned up in ferry like fibreglass monsters :)

you're not in the minority but if you happen to find yourself in the middle of 10 35-45fts all opening up (and nowhere to go) then you will find it a little less than fun. Same through the entrance at 10 knots in the summer. Col (and many others) drive their 38fts as they drove their 17's, just over bigger waves!

I've been let off the leash for the w/e. I've got a ful tank of fuel, a pocket full of beer tokens and a new rod that took my fancy in the tackle shop. Its a case of catch me if you can. Christchurch ledges or Lulworth banks. Depends on the weather tho!

Its good you warned people though.

I always am at poole out of the harbour round to studland, swanage etc .it would be good if the harbour patrol insisted that the larger boats kept to the same speed limits as the smaller ones are forced to ( Ive been pulled up for speeding as a 40 fairline went past at about twice the speed!)

Thinking about as I came out of the harbour two weeks ago someone in a 35-40 foot Sunseeker followed us out sped up far too early in the 10 knot zone and like a lorry hassling a car on the motorway tried to force us out his way. I didnt move and when speed limit allowed left him for dead - it was a bit swelly a few feet or so and he was getting knocked about more than we were! Would that be this Col. your talking about!

No - Col wouldn't have bothered you, and he's based in Port Solent anyway I think.
Opening up 'clear of the entrance' is one of the more difficult judgements! As I travel at 6.5knots in the Harbour I tend to open up to around 12-13 for comfort (and of course saftey /forums/images/icons/wink.gif clear of Shell Bay, then off past the limits) - all with due consideration of course .
May see you around...........

What's the history to this orgy of speed ? Does it really happen ? If so, why do the authorities allow it ? I wonder if other places could be similarly persuaded - imagine - R.Hamble or the Thames /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

yep - and it was fun!

best bit was all the radio traffic to PHC - and the sarcastic 'have you actually got anyone out here enforcing the speed limit in the channel..........'.took the biscuit. The response - 'there is currently only an advisory speed limit in the main channel (said dead pan) was met by a loud silence!

Seriously most of the larger craft kept it down - partially because they hadn't got used to the journey time to the bridge I suspect, and also 'cos it was pretty busy with sailing craft all over the harbour (esp Sunday).
There were also some idiots but then they are there even when the limit is in force.
Overall it makes a lot of sense through the winter months when the trots are deserted as well as the lack of boats.
