Hi All,
I need to store the wooden mast & boom for my dragon over the winter.

They will be hung from the rafters for the winter, someone has told me to hang the mast with the sail track facing down as this prevents the mast from warping....would appreciate any advice/comments in regard to storage of these.

Many thanks

Ken

I find it difficult to imagine that the sailtrack would have suffcient strength to influence the outcome one way or the other. I would be looking at making sure that all your suspension ropes are of an equal tension, so that the weight is equally distributed throughout the length of the spars. Suspend it at as many points as possible. I would also sight along the spars when you think that you are finished to make sure that there isn't a sag in middle or at the ends.

I agree with that advice. The only reason that I can think of to have the track down is that, if the roof leaks, water will run off the mast.

Perhaps it is because the section of the mast is larger fore and aft than from side to side, so if there is any tension on the mast when she is stored (due to any uneven tension in your strops), the mast will deflect less than if she were stored with the mast lying on her side?

As for the sail track facing down rather than up, would this help prevent your strops marking the varnish over a period of time, as the weight would be partly taken on the metal? (Depends on how fresh the varnish is of course.)

Regards,
David
