Throwing the towel in for winter?

For the first time in a very long time we had some really heavy rain and high winds so winter may well be on the way. We still have some sailing to do and will probably still be sailing for another few weeks.
I just wondered who else is still out there sailing and who has thrown in the towel for winter?
What area are you either sailing or wintered in?
We are near Cadiz in Spain and will be heading down Gib way at the weekend but have still got to decide where we will winter.

I must admit that we will be moving ashore for the winter but presently still on board and cruising Ireland. I reckon we have a few weeks left though. The boat will over winter in Dun Laoghaire whilst we prepare for our circumnav, with April as the most likely departure date.

After 3500 miles since June it will be hard to let go but there is just too much to organise.............

Fantastic sail in Palma Bay on Wednesday. 11 knots of wind 0.25 meter swell and temperature of 25c clear blue sky. Its also still swim-able, sea temperature is 23c.

It is a hack, but going med>canaries>carib>med etc does avoid the months when you’d prefer not to be in a boat.

Still sailing, making our way over to the Dodecanese islands at the moment. Planning to arrive in Spinalonga, Crete, at the beginning of December to spend the winter there.

We (wife went home Weds) come out tomorrow and I fly home Weds next.

All good things come to an end they say. Lets hope that we all meet again in a happy vein next year.

Seems like far fewer boats are coming out of the water this October in Gouvia. They only lifted two today and the same yesterday. Three tomorrow, including us.

Know what you mean! We left Palma Nova on Wednesday morning at 0700, set the sails, pointed the boat in the right direction and sailed all the way to Portinatx, Ibiza. One of the best sails we've had all season, 55 miles, 9 hours, F4 on the beam - proper job. I was tempted by a swim when we arrived but the Skipper wanted feeding so.....but yes, the sea temperature is still most pleasant

Ive been "towel throwing" all summer , work commitments. parent problems and kid problems all got in the way , now given in to Murphys law and sitting out yet another winter in the Uk and hope things pan out better in 2013

Basically, we leave Alanya next week, sail across to Port Said via Paphos. Transit the Suez Canal then slowly work our way down the reef anchorages to Hurgarda for Christmas.

In the new year we will be sailing to Port Galib, again via lots of anchorages (maybe to the Sudan border) then back up to the Gulf of Aqaba (to visit Aqaba, Jordan and Eilat, Israel) before making our way back out the Suez Canal by end of April.

The plan is to sail another few weeks. Find somewhere to winter where we will still be afloat as we have to return to the UK for a couple of weeks. Return to the boat and haul out for a few days to do the usual and get sailing again as early as possible next year.

Thanks for the plan. Sounds an exciting use of the winter months. I am sure you will enjoy it tremendously. Wish I had made my decision to leave the Mediterranean earlier in the year. Nex year for sure. In the meantime enjoy the winter.
