OK boys its 2:1 on the records..

2 to the girls (Emma & Ellen)
1 to the boys (Seb)

what you goin' to do 'bout that then? /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Do you think there is any comparison between them? I was surprised to hear that Emma is the youngest person and first female to circumnavigate, as it was my understanding that Ellen is younger and she certainly appears to be a woman. It appears that there are various levels of circumnavigation and the Vendee Globe does not qualify.

Not knocking Seb's achievement but it comes nowhere near that of the other two.

As said in the post above, these "records" are pretty much irrelevant to most of us. It's only the press and TV that seem to go orgasmic about them.

The difference is the route Vendee Globe and Around Alone have v different routes..

Ellen's record stands and so does Emma's as they are for the respective races.

ooh and what a pair of kill joys you are.. it may well have very little to do with the kind of sailing most people do on the board but really one would have expected a little more joie de vivre.

OK the gauntlet has been clutched. if you'd seen Jimi's standing 12 ft leap onto the pontoon at Kerrera due to the helm's inability to get any closer and Para needing to get to a fish shop - I think this evens it up to 2:2

Re: Re Jimi\'s leap

ahhhh and you should have seen mine from the end of a 12ft bowsprit to shore... Whishky fueled or I wouldn't have dared! /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif/forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Hmm
I'm not sure its irrelevant, Tony. I think there has been a fair bit of tracking of the various RTW races - assisted by programmes like virtual spectator. It's certainly a far cry from anything you or I might do but it's certainly of interest don't you think?

Joie de vivre

No, not a killjoy. Its just that I feel no more challenged to take the record for sailing around the world alone because Emma Richards did it than I do to win the London Marathon because Paula Radcliff did. Ignoring the facts that I am not a woman and I may be slightly over-qualified for the "youngest person" category.

I still maintain that these things have little to do with the type of sailing that most of us do. Good luck to those who do it, and especially those who win, but my sights are firmly fixed on more relevant things, like getting my MARPA to work and understanding how to use it!

Re: Taking up the guantlet..

A friend of mine, aged 13 has a Hurley 22, he phoned me up last night and said he wanted to sail the atlantic in it like Seb . He is deadly serious. This is genuine. Would anyone here be willing to mentor him and prepate him ? He is full of enthusiasm and is going to look for sponsorship. he spends all his pocket money on bits for the boat. He needs someone who can give him more time than I.
Can anyone help? SW area

Re: Taking up the guantlet..

Regardless of boys vs girls - it has to be of value to have high profile winners for sailing contests. On another post recently people were talking about who participates in sailing and why or why not. Emma, Ellen & Seb (as in last post) have all inspired/motivated people to think - yeah I can do that. They may not ever mean to/want to/manage to go to the Southern Ocean, but it gets them on to the water and finding out what they do want to do. And they mostly (particularly Ellen) come from non-sailing 'ordinary' families.

Besides, we do tend to benefit from some of the technology of the racing fraternity. We lose as well with designs becoming less cruiserish etc - but it's not all one way.

It might be irrelevant to the sort of sailing that people on this forum do- but having decent female role models IS relevant to some of the members of this forum....I don't know if i would have taken my boat out on my own the other day if I hadn't been able to think 'if she can do it so can I'.

I just take the view that I have qualified several times over...

Ask Emma for a date

I'm not sure what SWMBO would have to say about it but I have to admit to being completely smitten with young Em. She has to be close to dream woman, loves sailing but in a healthy way rather than a flying dutchman kind of way (sorry Ellen), she's a lovely looking girl and she's Scottish (I think ? Helensburgh sailing club) and she's only 14 years younger than me. We have some recent things in common ... she has just sailed around the world on her own and last weekend I sailed to the Folly with 3 mates on board. I am also Scottish. If I was single what do you think my chances would be ?
