Gota name my new launch , thinking of naming her , Harlot , might ask other posters their opinion of my present choice

Looked up Harlot on line there are slightly varying comment and explanations given , but

The most appropriete I found was , Harlot , most suitable comment was , gives a good enjoyable time but costs a lot , surely that just about sums up boating ?

So very apt therefore suitable ?

But do I have the Guts ?

I hope the boat in question is a Galway Hooker.

If you're going to buy a boat presumably you'd be proud and respectful of her, as anyone ought to be towards somenting they trust and lavish care on, maybe even love.
It strikes me as being horribly crass to saddle such a piece of your life with a disrespectful or demeaning name.
Maybe a racing dinghy can cope with a racy name but to call your boat a Whore is pretty full-on. Why do it? It's far from clever or funny and the cruder these things get the sillier and less funny they look. Have a thought too for needing to quote the name over the RT or even by phone...

Our first ‘cruiser’ was , a Leisure 17 which four lads in their early 20’s bought as a group, needless to say at that age anything goes so she ended up being named ‘Eskimo Nell’ partly because I could then recite the complete piece from memory ( not sure if I can now unless I’m p****d enough).

Or even explain to the grandkids what the name means.

A harlot is a working girl - boats are female, a launch is a (sort of) working boat, and boats cost lots to keep, and swmbo's seem to have similar attitudes to both - seems perfectly apt to me

Several years ago moored overnight in Port Solent near us was 'Not-a Lot' echoing Paul Daniel's catchphrase at the time,' Costalot' was also seen more recently. ' Harlot' does not have the appeal for me though.

Why not go with it? Can't see why it would offend anyone......well, apart from the usual face scrunchers

Thanks for ALL the comments , actually the Launch was named 'Chariot' but the last owner did not like that so 'dropped' the first letter , a C , making the name into , ' Hariot' , which I gather is not the normal way to spell 'Hariet' , but thats how i bought her .

Although the word 'Harlot' has meanings going far far back , its largely been superceeded by , Sex Worker etc , so the name 'Harlot' is I guess largely unheared off these days ; mind you I do not travel or enjoy the the worlds where Harlot was used , ever ; to late now though ?

Might mention that the boats name is printed in capitals so easy to change 'CHARIOT' into 'HARIOT' but a black marker pen changes 'HARIOT' into 'HARLOT' , presumably at my cost ; ah well still undecided

Thank you all

One of my female friends invented a game - as we motored along the Hamble we would spot names. One person got points for every name they spotted that suited the boat and another got a point for spotting a name that better suited a stripper. After a few games, we had to change the scoring system as strippers won every time!
