Thorneycroft T90

Anyone out there know what road vehicles were fitted with the Leyland 1.5 deisel engine as marinised by Thorneycroft?
I understand the Sherpa van was one... but I don't know which years.
I want to get one from a scrappy for spares etc.

NOt sure the Sherpa ever used it, I thought it used the 1800. The only thing I know that was fitted with the 1500 was a very few Austin A60 cars and maybe the Diesel J4, having said that although I've heard of a diesel J4 everyone I've seen has been 1622 petrol.

I may be wrong, but the 1500 engine has not been fitted to cars or trucks since the seventies so the chance of finding a scrap car with one is remote. I am sure that the engine was used in the old Post Office J4 vans but there is not many of these arround. The Sherpa had the inclined 1800 cc engines. Best chance is to look at the adverts in Boat Mart and pick up a block. There is no problems with spares as AMC at Preston can supply all of the spares.

all the early sherpas were 1800, never heard of a 1500, can't you use the 1800, as used in all the 250's... bullet proof, just replace the shells befor you fit the engine. you should be looking for en ex gas/elec/water board van circa 1983-85, the later ones had the bigger and better 2.5 peugeot engine... good luck, steve.

I believe when Leyland made tractors they had a small tractor fitted with the 1500 diesel - but don,t know which one - this must have been about 25 yrs ago - one of my friends had one on a smallholding - try a tractor dealer.
