The key word is “May”. As with the scare story about blue car badges. News it’s in short supply just now, so take all of it with a large pinch. They’ll be getting us all to rush out to buy pointless international driving licences next…..Oh, they already did that!

So how will they check your credit card balance then? Most transactions are now cashless, using Applepay, contactless, etc. So there is NO WAY that they can check what funds you have available to allow you to stay in the country?

Easy.

If I had to, and I guess I do, I would show them my credit card using the banking app on my phone.

It would show my credit limit and my current balance.

Not a scare story at all. 'May be required to produce evidence of self-support when entering the country' is not exactly rocket science. If here for 5 days and have about 1100 quid in the bank and a return ticket bob's yer uncle. If you appear at customs with yer arse hanging out yer trousers looking you don't have 2 ha'pennies to rub together you may, just may, get pulled.

If you’re coming in on your boat there seems very little interest in either your Schengen entry status or personal details. Based on my current experience anyway. We arrived on the north coast at the start of the month and have been cruising it since. In the first week we had a friendly visit from customs, who left a duplicate of the form we completed, to save our being troubled again. Only interested in boat SSR and ownership. Checked my passport for the photo and number - didn’t turn pages to look at entry stamps. No questions re purpose / duration of visit, nor means of support.

The title is grossly misleading . The EU and Schengen Area which includes Spain want to ensure that visitors have the financial means to stay in the country, able to pay for a hotel, food etc. so the £85 is for this purpose.
People who sail to the Schengen area have no issues as their boat is their"hotel".
Many people, especially young, used to take a flight to the Med countries staying there the whole summer and sometimes winter, but now the UK is out from the EU/Schengen. When people arrive in the UK they face the same issue having to demonstrate that they have enough money to live for the duration. Things have changed for the Brits, not for the better. I was in the Republic of Ireland this summer on sailing holidays, we needed extra paperwork but nothing else.

Perhaps it's a view on the future of the UK economy post-Brexit, and the possibility that UK citizens will be entering the EU as economic migrants?
This situation is only temporary, give it a few years and common sense will prevail again and things reverse back to normality. At least it is good to know that we can still take our boats outside the UK for three months.

No; this is the new normal, and they're quite right to protect their borders from the possibility of a 3rd country economic migrant influx.
It is a shame that there are so many people who have been enjoying sailing to Europe and staying there for many months at a time hassle free. We only have ourselves to blame for this.

Entering Germany for work, I had to crack open the HSBC app.

I can only assume that the funds aspect is being handled with a light touch - I'm sure that the Daily Wail would be very exercised on the subject if someone had actually had a problem.
