Bradwell report, 17TH, 18TH, 24TH April 2010

Backdated report, Saturday 17th April, along with Steve and Dave went out into the Wallet, and then to the pier at Clacton, all we managed was three small skate and a handful of little codling, nothing worth a picture.

On Sunday 18th we were out again with Halfapint (Barry) HIS DAD Peter who has been unwell for quite a while and Gene Hunt, (Grahame) fished much nearer home and had about 20 skate, kept 7 for the pot, no codling, Peter enjoyed the day and that was the object of the exercise, the weather could not have been better, and was enjoyed by all, Barry had a good day as well, but in the end it class that showed and I slaughtered him, almost two to one but he had the best one.

Peter even with a severe handicap also boated a few.

Today 24th, there was just us three (owners) Mick, Steve and self, left the marina at 8-20am and went back to last Sunday’s mark, NOTHING, ZILCH we gave it a good go as well but it was not to be. So a move was made and for the first hour again all we got was a doggy and a pouting, not what you would call brilliant, however by this time we had enough used bait to mince and send down in the dropper, “WHO SAYS THEY DON’T WORK?” take a look at these.

They look sader than you old gits in baseball caps :D

Oh I shouldn't laugh but you gotta admit that's funny :D

See now, what you are up to there is exactly what I'm trying to achieve...I get bites and pull stuff up but nothing worth writing home about....My best to date was an octopus...but that was more luck than judgment.

Some lovely fish there!

GL, I think dedication and persistence to the cause, years of practice and a good group of mates that share the common interest, helps a fair bit.
As Omega has said previously, not all days are big catches.

.

See now we understand this....My wife on the other hand doesn't seem to fully appreciate how much time and dedication these things take!!

Just moved the boat to another yard this weekend which is right on the beach, so hopefully I'll be able to get out in the evenings after work...Rumour has it one of the guys I work with is pretty good fisherman so I'll get him out to show me how they do things over here.

But to be realistic even the Romans used to go on about how few fish there are in the Med...Plus all the over fishing hasn't helped matters.

I was just thinking the same when I got to the last paragraph....how many of those little bright blue fishing dinghies there are in the Greeks Isles.

They say Melbourne is/has/was the second largest greek community outside Athens, and boy do those guys love to fish. Think you are up against some pretty stiff competition.;-)

Not only Oz. We were in NZ for our honey moon. Were were in the back of beyond, long road in, you had to come out the same way. Anyways, they had a little static caravan thing as a Fish and chip place...There we were sitting there in the warm and the wind and rain outside (ahh NZ Spring), enjoying our fish and chips. There was a NZ fish chart from a NZ company showing all the different types of fish with their common and Latin names....Down in small print at the bottom...The company was owned by a Greek!!

Anyways, this year I'm going back for this fella. I put him back last year but I reckon he should be a good size this year :) That's as long as some other bugger hasn't caught him.

to be serious, for a minute what you should try is trolling with a Rapala or yazaki lure, at about 6 knots, keep an eye open for birds working, i.e diving into the water, you could well pick up a tuna of some sort, or other pelagic, what it will do for sure is save your fuel bill, give you an eye for natural things around you, and make proper use of the boat instead of charging about the ocean for no apparent reason.

Yep, have done a bit of trolling last year, it suits me as I tend to keep my speed down. Price of petrol is scary and my little boat is a bit of an old girl so I prefer to treat her easy in the later years.

I only got the boat back in the water last year so didn't get much use out of her, this year I hope to get a bit more....
