This hurts...anyone we know?

It's not actually that difficult to get under (being a local) and I have done it in bigger boats. He just got it terribly wrong .. And then made it worse for himself !

Agreed - the camera position foreshortens the view and makes the arch look a lot smaller than it is. I don't think the heavily drinking pub patrons helped. I wouldn't have liked to seen it down there yesterday with the Rugby people around. Must have been mayhem.
 
Why do people love to laugh at others misfortune. Really horrible.

I doubt if people would laugh nearly as much at a classic boat suffering, just as a smashed up Range Rover brings joy to the bystander's heart but a smashed up E-Type brings a tear to the eye.

Taking a kedge off a ways, especially when it was pinned sideways against the bridge.

And then what? Pull himself sideways against the current?!

The only solution was not to get himself in that position in the first place. He badly misjudged the effect of the current as he tried to turn far too early after going astern.
