Thinking of moving to the East Coast...

I have never had problems with yobbishness, but then I would rather be out on the river at night than in the marina. Pin Mill or Wrabness are so much nicer at night. (they did find a dead bloke near my boat last year though......... beat that for a comment ;-) )

This "road" everyone is talking about is about 12ft wide and is a no through road that stops at the neptune carpark 20ft away. Whilst you won't get run over, it is however used by pedestrians (some of them drunk). The whole area is well lit.

As far as the Haven marina is concerned, you can't currently walk there easily from Neptune as the building work at the West end has blocked off the road/path. The only options are dinghy, swim or a longish walk. It may improve when they finish the work.

do they have pump out???

No idea - they don't have hazardous waste disposal which might include......... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Can't remember seeing any pump outs on the East Coast - the only one I saw on the South Coast was called "Heads Away" which raise a chuckle.

This brings back many happy memories. We explored this same area to keep our first "proper" yacht and as we lived only 15 minutes from Ipswich at the time that was our first choice. We found the Haven people very friendly and we loved the facilities and even put a deposit down to hold a berth until we could get the boat ready to move up the coast.

But like all good plans, this one fell apart. We bought our boat at West Mersea and got seduced - in the 6 weeks we worked on her there we completely fell in love with the place. We kept her there on a mooring instead and enjoyed many wonderful sails on the Blackwater and, yes, eventually up the beautiful Orwell to Shotley and Haven.

So I hope you find somewhere - anywhere around there is great imho.

Dear MrsChellers,
I forgot to mention, Haven Marina are putting in some 12-14 new berths in the next month to six weeks. To view the whole wet dock go to https://marinas.com/view/marina/6823
The "facilities" are under the block of flats on right of picture, the car park to the left side of these flats is now almost complete student halls of residence.
There are some boats leaving this spring / summer to go south from Haven, so this may free up some room.
Good luck. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Thanks for the heads-up (wretched American phrase, sorry!) We'll go and have a chat with them on Wednesday, see if they think they could squeeze us in if we think it's a better location than Neptune.

In the 2 seasons we were there, we never saw any evidence of bottles being thrown at boats..... but did get fairly regular noise on a sat night with the late revellers!

Yes you have to cross a road, but in reality its a dead end side road, with virtually no traffic other than cars getting into the marina carpark, so its no big deal... my concern with it was more that the kids couldn't really go to the loos on their own after dusk.....

There doesn't seem to be much 'cross yachtiness' between Haven and Neptune, but I believe that a wet dock yacht club has just been formed, and has a decent calender of events organised.....

Thanks people for all the comments.

We visited Ipswich Wet Dock today. Neptune Marina's spot looks reasonable but we also visited the other side (Ipswich Haven) and that probably appeals slightly more to us. We're on their waiting list and hope something comes up for when we need it.

Woolverstone said they might have space in due course but it'd be later in the Autumn (and more pricey!)

We're looking forward to becoming East Coasters. We'll be moving to North Essex from Kent and don't know anyone around there so are hoping some of you lot might take pity on us and say hello now and again!

MrsChellers (& HWMBO too, of course, whose username is Chellers)

Well, we'd better let you know about a few of our get togethers, when we get them organised then!

Quite a few of us on the Orwell, and even more when you widen the area to include the Deben and Backwaters, so keep an eye out.

We're experts, as a group, in managing to keep just enough beer cold, and wine available.../forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

PS.... there are some brilliant destinations close to the Orwell for a cat.... we see cats beached at Stone point quite regularly.....

Mr Chellers is very much looking forward to returning to the East Coast for some sailing, particularly with such a shallow draught (0.83m) so he can explore a little further. We will no doubt join in with some Forum stuff when we finally get there, wherever 'there' ends up being.

Thanks again for all the help.
