Thinking of moving to another Marina.

We are currently berthed in Poole Harbour and enjoy cruising the local area.
However we have also enjoyed our limited trips across to the Solent and surrounding area.

We are considering moving to a marina that will give us more access to areas to the Isle of Wight,Lymington,Chichester, etc involving shorter cruising times.
We have a Merry Fisher 805 and usually amble along at about 7 - 10 knots.

We anticipate an increase in annual fees having contacted some marinas in the area re. berthing charges etc. and look to visiting some of the marinas when we have decided on a short list.
Our journey into the area is A34 M3 M27

I would appreciate opionions on the marinas in the area.

Great idea - do it - move somewhere else for a change of scenery; make new friends; if it doesn't work out it is only for one year.

I am also thinking about changing marinas next year. I have been at the same marina in Poole for 6 years. Excellent service and staff but it all a bit "samey" after 6 years.Absolutely no complaints-apart from having to endure forumite Geoffs jokes which are enough to make one want to relocate permanently !!

We moved from a Solent marina to Poole and it only lasted one year before we moved back to Solent.

The suitability of marinas/berths etc, depends on many individual factors including the type of boat that you have and the type of use age.

However, one of the main influencers was the fact that in the summer, Poole is fantastic for all the short and longer trips, but in winter it just didn't offer the variety of short distance destinations that are possible in most weathers in the Solent.

I think that the ideal arrangement would be the Solent for the winter, and Poole for 3-4 months in the summer. Sunny weekends in Studland are fantastic, as are winter weekends in Cowes or Lymington.

It's an individual decision, but from our experience, Poole and the Solent each have their own unique offering.

Cheers

Garold

Ps. If you fancy Ocean Village you need to be aware of the building works. Take a good look at all your choices and talk to the berth orders for an insight before you confirm your booking. Perhaps go as a visitor for a few days.

Pps. We were also fed up with the frequent waves rolling into Port of Poole Marina.

Maybe there's an option to get the best of both worlds... base at Cobbs Quay in the summer and ask MDL if they'd support a move to Ocean Village in the winter, say, from Nov through to March. Both are zone 2 and hopefully MDL will be supportive with most boats being on the hard during the transfer period freeing up spaces in OV. Worth asking

Ocean Village. Easy access, midde of town, decent resturants and bars, fantastic staff cheaper than hamble marinas and you still get the freedom berthing benefits if you want to stay over at other marinas.
+1. Agree with all that but....

Marina fees are considerably less on the Isle of Wight and the saving offsets the cost of coming over. East Cowes marina £387/m; Island Harbour £300/m. Even if you don't want to go out the boat is already somewhere you would have gone to. Quite a few people on the mainland keep their boats over here.
+1

This is very true also. People I know who live in Oxfordshire berth at East Cowes and love it. Cheap enough to counterbalance the ferry cost and if the weather is bad there is plenty to do at the place you were going to anyway.

But he says he wants to move…

Let him carry on, in fact let him persuade the whole forum to move to Poole and our berthing fees may reduce ;)

I agree with Geoffs, you dont want to move Poole is lovely, much better than the solent, loads of places to go, great food, loads of lifeboats, warm blue water, weather dryer and sunnier

....for a reason. Its a dump.

Ouch!! I had two years there and only moved as I was restricted by the bridge and my princess is a flybridge.

Been at swanwick nearly a year now and simply love it.

Nothing wrong with cabin if your flexible with tides and entry / exit times, make sense if you have a low air draught.

I did hear that anthoney foulkes is spending ££ on new facilities over the winter months, I'm sure he will make the place nice.

I am considering a move from the chandlery barge (Foulkes and sons) but for the only reason of the bridge and the fact that after several years of being there my timings and the Tides are starting to not work out for me (fly bridge) The owner is spending a lot of money and has just installed a new facilities block and there is talk of other new facilities next year, it is a very friendly place indeed and if I do move I will certainly miss everyone. Still exploring my options!

If OP is looking around the Hamble then it is worth looking at the chandlery barge, cabin boat yard or Eastlands as well as the other mainstream mooring providers in that area.

Many Thanks for all your replies and comments.
They will certainly help to make my decision much easier.

Its always interesting to hear why people choose certain marinas , price, access, surroundings, facilities or as many of these things that tick boxes.
Thanks again

Where ever you end up, hope you enjoy. I just love Poole, for me there isn't equal, except perhaps, Torbay, Dart and Salcombe. That's too far for me, A34, M3, M27, sounds like you come from a similar direction to me.

Morning

For ease to getting to a Marina then the 'Hamble' may be your best bet. It very easy coming from the M3 onto M27 then down Hamble Lane. Like the others said with MDL you get the option of staying at other MDL Marinas FOC. Be sure to ask as the operate different zone areas. Hamble being zone 1 you get good benefits. All 3 of MDL Marinas on the Hamble all have completely different vibes to them.

If you want easy access to a small shopping village/town with food places as well then Lymington maybe better fitted for your needs. Berthon have done some re-vamping around, but it is true you have to use on site workers, this may offer a little challenge if you have someone you trust to work on your boat!

Lymington also has the Yacht Haven. Has a great little bar/restaurant but being the only place on site you pay the price.

Good Luck in your in venture.

I always leave early, about 6am, and it's an easy run, about hour and a half from home. I know you have a little further to travel, Pete. Wouldn't have thought Southsea to Poole was a huge difference to your journey.

Later on summer Saturdays can be a nightmare, has taken me 4 hours if I get it wrong. Later on Friday evening should be ok.

End of M27 to Poole about half an hour, but can be over an hour if traffic bad. Summer Sunday evenings can be difficult, leaving 1600 may mean you miss the worse. I come home Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.

Cobbs Quay is a super marina, and the new bridge hasn't been any where near the problem I feared, although maybe more troublesome for your fly bridge, than my little 'un!

Look forward to seeing you in Poole, Pete :)
