Thinking of a RIB

Starting to have an urge for a RIB for local day boating to the islands (Herm, Sark etc). Been looking at Humber Leisure Pro. A RIB would be a new departure for me, so guidance appreciated.

A rib is massive fun buy one you wont regret it. Don't go too big stick at a size that you can handle and launch/recover on your own. something between 4.5 - 5.5 m will be good

I’d actually recommend something a bit larger for our waters especially if you meet wind against tide in the Russel. My minimum would be a 6.5m for get you home competency and enough deck space for easy use with company.

I assume you would keep it afloat so I would agree 6.5m is an absolute minimum for round here. I had A 6.5 with a 140 I would not go any smaller.

Son J has a nice but old 7.5 and two good friends of mine have nice relatively new ribs I will put you in touch with them for a chat.

That size is ok if you keep it afloat but will possibly end up with less use if you launch each time. No idea of your budget or if you are buying new or second hand. This sort of thing is nice at 19 foot and a 115 hp on the back is a very good match. This was one I hired in Skiathos this year

Thanks everyone. really helpful. My feeling is that 7m to 8m would be good with maybe up to 200hp on the back. We'd keep her in the water during the season and then on shore thereafter so no need for a trailer.

Any comments on make?

Thought you asked the same question a couple of years ago piers ?
Any away, I was very impressed with the XS 800 rib I used for the level2 course. Fitted with 200Hp Verado. Felt very safe.
I used to have an Avon SR4 (4mtr) rib with 50hp merc which was good but a little too small IMHO, OK for a couple of people but not much space on it for kit.

You’d really want a 300hp on the back of a 8m, a 200 with a full boat will be a bit pants

I’ve been hankering for a rib.
Just bought a Joker clubman 6.2m in Malta with a Evinrude 150 E-TEC. Absolutely fantastic rib and engine. Had it out in some rough stuff and handled extremely well and when it calmed down got 58 knots!!
If you go too big, might as well buy a boat!

Make sure you don't just by a big rib and forget why you wanted a smaller boat in the first place

An 8m today 1x 300 is the norm.

Boats are built around engines and from a cost point of view the sweet spot is just before you move to twin OB/s.

A rib is a sports boat, middle age crisis sports car replacement.

I would also consider a smaller engine and use twins instead, of your engine conks out you can still get home on one engine.

What sort of number are those around the 6m mark secondhand on basis not over say 5years old ?

Any Ribcraft over 7.5m and 200hp would be a good choice.

I wouldn't bother with twins - PITA and you need separate fuel systems to make them worthwhile.
