I am currently constrained by a very tidal mooring in the Wash which means that if you go out, you cant come back again until the tide returns. Although convenient for my home, I find that the convenient tides (morning and evening) for day sailing are once a fortnight at the weekend, and if the weather is rubbish that means a month has gone by.

Could I please have opinions on the choice of a) Titchmarsh, b) Shotley, c) Levington or d) somewhere else within easy reach of the A14.

Value for Money, facilities, and friendliness of the locals are important as well as easy access to be able to sail at most states of the tide.

Boat is 30ft Twin Keel. Thanks in advance.

Titchmarsh is nice, and unless you draw over 1m tidally unconstrained. Marina a bit out of the way, and the journey from A14 is not good. Probably cheapest of the 3.

Shotley (we're based there), nicest atmosphere, great staff, but about 15mins from A14. Great 24/7 access to the Stour and Orwell and closest to open water.

Levington has always felt a bit cliquey to me. Unless you race, you are a second class citizen. Quickest from A14 at about 10 mins. Similar price to Shotley.

Hope that helps.

the quickest from the A14 is Fox`s 30 seconds from Ipswich central exit.
you will find all staff superb, all facilities on site & a good friendly club that serves very reasonably priced & good food.
berthing has been kept nxt year the same as 3 yrs ago with special haul-out rates for berth holders.

I draw just over 1.1m, so not too tidally constrained. I was wondering about the Backwaters v. Stour and Orwell as sheltered cruising when you haven't time/the will to go too far.

Looking at Trains, I can get to Walton from Peterborough for just £8.00 which seems remarkably good value. Nice to know you do not need to drive. What's it like going in by Pye End if it has blown up a bit rough, because it is pretty shallow all the way through?

It looks as though Suffolk Yacht Harbour is full anyway, but seems a long way from public transport. Shotley also looks like a drive, but Foxes is close enough to Ipswich.

Shotley looks a bit more expensive than Titchmarsh, but apart from locking in and out is nice. Did my Dazed kipper with Brittania a few years ago and liked it.

Choices choices.
Thanks for comments.

Was there this morning - bloke I spoke to said they had 20 vacant berths at the moment.
Next season's renewal forms for current bertholders are out at the moment. They've got to be returned with a 'yea' or 'nay' by the 18th of this month.

In the current climate that figure of 20 could grow. I know they have been sending out letters to people on their waiting list (did you get one? ;) ).

Best not to ask the people in the chandlery but go straight to the Berthing Manager upstairs (in Harbourmaster's office) - his name is Chris Nunn.

Yes, we've been on the waiting list for 8 years! - well, we forgot to take ourselves off it when we moved elsewhere - and we've just got that yea or nay letter.

I think it's six of one half a dozen etc Between Shotley and Syh.... The lock adds a bit of a restriction ... As it closed for a month in winter.... But otoh it also adds security and it is totally 100% sheltered.... The drive from the a14 is no big deal... An opportunity to stop at a shop and get some beer.... Titchmarsh is nice... But I wouldn't want to live there... For immediate access to 24/7 sailing it has to be Shotley or Syh... And Shotley has more pubs I am lead to believe! Oh, and proper baths!
