Thief steals yacht out of love for his daughter
Fri 21 May, 2004 09:30
DUBLIN (Reuters) - A thief living in Ireland missed his young daughter so much that he stole a 84,000 euro (56,000 pounds) yacht and sailed to England to see her.
Ignoring a budget airline industry which offers flights across the Irish Sea for a handful of euros, Lawrence McMillan took the yacht from a marina in southern Ireland and headed east, a court heard.
"It was a most foolhardy expedition, but he wanted to return to his daughter in Boston, Lincolnshire, to whom he is deeply attached," McMillan's lawyer said.
The would-be sailor, a 53-year-old Scottish-Canadian who lived in a caravan in western Ireland, ran into trouble off the English coast and had to be rescued by helicopter, newspapers reported on Friday.
The court sentenced him to 14 months in jail on Thursday.
