Q1. Where is there a harbour authority but no port?
Q2. If you breached a harbour authority Direction would you prefer to do it in Harwich or the Thames? And why?

Best I provide a couple of clues:

Q1. How far down is the water?
Q2 I can't think of a clue! It's a silly question. Because you are all good people.

I’m afraid I can only add to the deafening silence on this matter but I enjoyed gazing at the questions uselessly and look forward to learning something when the answers come to light. Keep up the good work.

Are we to suggest answers on the forum now, or save them until we have all the questions and send them secretly at Christmas?

Once upon a time, a good forumite created an interesting and entertaining Christmas Quiz comprising many questions (20 or more?). The first one was so popular that it followed in the ensuing year and so on. I cannot remember how the quiz was marked just for the simple reason I never managed to answer all the questions! 😵‍💫 Eventually nobody volunteered to devise a subsequent one. Perhaps all sensible, pleasant, professional and knowledgable questions had been exhausted. So all that was left was pointless, uninteresting and tedious questioners questions.

By all means answer now.

Slightly off topic, but at St Lawrence bay we have a harbour master (Howard) but no harbour. What a rip off.

My thoughts are 1- Maldon as I don't think there is a working wharf any more -
and 2 - London since on the website -three stages before prosecution Verbal Warning (Informal); Harbour Master's Warning (Formal); - Harbour Master's Reprimand (Formal); - whereas Harwich website goes directly to fines (although we know they are very polite on the radio and put up with a lot of bad behavior from yachts very close to the big ships)

Perhaps others can give thoughts before you let us know whether it is right or not.

Q2 - I'd rather breach Harbour Directions in the Thames than Harwich, at least solely in terms of potential financial pain should I be prosecuted for such a breach.

A bit of Googling and hurried scanning of legislation suggests that the potential financial penalties for a such breach are (currently) £1,000 in the Thames and £2,500 in Harwich.

(In practice, breaching Directions in the Thames is more likely to end up with more painful practical consequences, due to the volume and variety of traffic and structures, etc., given most Directions will be for safety, the orderly conduct of vessels, and the like.

I don't know the answer to Q1, but am intrigued to hear it. I assumed it was an old port, such as those in north Norfolk, which had dried out but who's harbour authority hadn't been wound down, or an inland harbour authority (Tillergirl's clue might relate to a higher water level?) perhaps in enclosed waters such as the Lakes, which wouldn't have a port as such, but I can't see either of those in the list of harbour authorities.

I did, though, see in that list of harbour authorities one of Stena's ports - 'Hairy's Harbour' - which I've neither heard of nor could find any other reference to online. can anyone shed any light on this?

p.s. I now see I was looking at a list of 'Competent Harbour Authorities', and that is something different from 'Statutory Harbour Authorities' (a term I'm more familiar with, but which I can't find a list of).

It is stated that all Competent Harbour Authorities are also Statutory Harbour Authorities, which leaves open the juicy possibility there are Statutory Harbour Authorities which are not competent! 😁

Q2 - the right question but the wrong answer - well as far as I read it. Harwich fines are at level 4 - max fine is £2500. PLA fines are at level 5 - max fine is £5000. But it wouldn't surprise me LS that you found it to the contrary. Much cheaper to offend in Harwich.

Q1. Maldon doesn't have a Harbour Authority but does have Harbour Improvement Commisioners Board (or similar) so doesn't count. No port Jon of course. Although I suspect Howard does sometimes have some in a glass. :giggle: . Turn the issue round. Where is the most recent Harbour Authority? 1st April, 2024 sorry, a wicked jape. Started 19th April, 2024. There now is a harbour. But there is no port.

LS - you actually might have stumbled on a clue 'might relate to a higher water level' . One of the harbour limits depends upon "then extending in a straight line due west to the coast to a point at xxx, then following the level of Highest Astronomical Tide (HAT) to the point at xxxxxxx'

Yeap. Well done. T'is no more than a dotted line on a chart. A virtual harbour. Navionics and C-Map have it marked! The plan is for a big, big, big jetty to land some bits for the new Sizewell C. at some time in the future. There are no rules (aka General Directions) at the moment but there are a few local NtM everynow and again.

👍

It isn't a jetty it's a beach landing facility. As I am in contact with Sizewell C on various matters, I will have to annoy them at the next public meeting by asking who is the Harbour Master.

You might call it a BLF but me being antient I would call it a jetty!

"The permanent BLF would will be longer (approximately 100m in total length) to better align the barge deck with the platform, making deliveries safer and more efficient. It would will require approximately 28 permanent piles in total.
1.1.6 The temporary BLF would MBIF will be up to approximately 505m in length. Approximately 114 piles would will be required to construct the temporary BLFMBIF, of which approximately 12 would will be located above Mean High Water Springs (MHWS).

I assume it hasn't been decided?
