Anecdotes from Stingo are no longer being updated because I am receiving over a thousand spams a week and it takes over an hour to download. I really couldn't be bothered.

Ah well, it was fun while it lasted.

Anyone want to buy the stingo domain. The price is highly negotiable and comes with an incredible variety of email offers?

Stingo, this is very bad news !!! You will leave a lot of people disappointed.

How about putting your anecdotes on here, rather than your own website, so at least some of us can keep up with your progress and enjoy your trip with you ?

Hi John, that's bad news! The b**tds! I don't know too much about this stuff - (any stuff really)! Can't you dump that e-mail addy and only give your new one to a few friends, then don't publish it? Or, block the one you use to everyone except a few chosen ones?

I'm sure that some Web Wisdom will be forthcoming.

Good luck with whatever you do.

Rob

Have you not a web mail option? During the day I check my webmail and delete those spams without actually opening them. Then I can download the ones I want when I get home.

Broadband helps though..

The word is....

... that AOL are now refusing to deliver emails to their clients if they originate through a proxy email server because

PROXY = SPAMMER

as far as they're concerned.

Bad bad bad news John! We really look forward to your writings... How bout setting your mail client to download "headers only", then you make download times alot quicker and you can easily spot the real stuff from the dross. Should improve matters for you alot.

Alternatively, I'm sure somebody back here would be willing to filter your mail for you, but your privacy is then invaded somewhat.

Send me a PM if you wanna know how to do the headers thingy...

Stingo,

Just set your domain e-mail address @stingo.co.uk to bounce - all except for one such as stingoisgrate@stingo.co.uk or something equally unguessable - then set that one to forward to a webmail address such as Hotmail, or just carry on using Outlook Express as normal. Only give it out to people you trust.

That'll work - no more junk. Shutting down your site because of spam is really unnecessary.

If you don't know how to do this and would like more (free) info and/or help then PM me - there are lots of ways round this.

Take your email of your website, that is how the spiders work, use an online email for contact or write it out long hand for people who really want to get in touch.

johnatstingodotcom for example.

I have been reading your site with interest and will for one miss it.

Can you not change your email and keep it private,

Don\'t give up - PLEASE

John,

We all like reading your anecdotes as, being "virtual" sailors here, we are actually sailing along with you. I'm sure most of us would love to be there in person.

Please investigate some of the options indicated by others and keep the anecdodes going.

Jim

Re: Don\'t give up - PLEASE

Okay, I am listening....

My present ISP want to open my wallet by more than I call reasonable just to change my email options and add anti-spam. They also want big bucks to release my domain if I want to take my business else where. Their webmail interface is prehistoric so I don't have a "delete first" then download option.

Can anyone recommend a cruiser friendly ISP?

I'm no expert, but if you do get a new site, one suggestion I've seen is to put your email address as a graphic rather than text. That way the automatic b*##%rs can't find it to spam you.

Oh no they haven\'t!

the only way the spammers win is when someone actually gives them money for one of their scams.

what we need to do is find the idiot who does and stop him.

Stingo,

Register stingoid.co.uk with 123Reg for £6.29 for two years then take out their Starter web hosting option for £20 per annum.

Then just set your original site to forward to the new one - job done!

PM me for other options if this doesn't suit for any reason.

Re: Don\'t give up - PLEASE

I got lots of spam & scams after advertising a couple of things on the net.

Maybe stating the obvious, but can't you just set-up an outlook express message rule to "delete from the server" all mail addressed to your problem address?(Works for me) or even "all messages" if you can't use other addresses on that domain, then set up another email (see you've done that already).

I use 34SP

Reasonable rates, and the horde email interface is excellent. It can be used as a POP email (download to outlook for example) or to retrieve online. Online you will just see a list of mails which you can delete without having to open.

You can access from anywhere so updating from internet cafe's etc should be no problem or using you mobile phone from onboard.

Support is excellent, a support forum is also hosted with near 24hr moderator support. Any quieries I have had have usually been answered with a couple of hours.

Re: Oh no they haven\'t!

I heard recently that up to 7% of spam messages are replied to.

Who are they then, 7% of people on this forum have apparently found something useful being posted to them by spammers.....must be the older men me thinks /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
